I love the color, shapes, prickliness (is that a word?) and scruffiness of cactus.  Just like an oak tree it speaks of Texas to me.

I often slap leftover paint from several paintings on a canvas to build up some texture and color over time.  I used one of those canvases for this painting which added, I think, to the scruffiness and texture.  Here is the canvas I used with the cactus sketched out in charcoal:


Looks like a mess, but it is fun to see the colors come through and to bring some order to the chaos!
