This is an area off Route 205 near Paluxy, Texas that has goats. I particularly liked the way the tree branches slumped. Painting an abstract landscape is delightful. I love the freedom of choosing colors and shapes. For me it is truly a creative experience.

This is another study I did from my field trip to the Ft. Worth Botanical gardens. I love the variety of flowers they plant and maintain. I am motivated to paint spring time subject, because our weather has been spring like. I painted it with a palette knife and lots of colorful paint.

Some of you already know I have now aquired two Yorkie Puppies, little terrors,and the light of my life... but more on them later.

These two are not mine, however one is related to mine. I took this photo a while ago before even contemplating I would have two of my own one day.

These little guys are part of my Rainbow Series.

My own Yorkies, Pebbles and Bam Bam, will be featured later, maybe when they hold still long eneough to get a good shot.. Ha!

I love the passion and energy in the color red, so I thought it would be fun to play with the still life I had set up of roses and make a painting where red was the dominant color. In person, seeing these roses at life size, I wanted the viewer to be swept up in the movement and emotion of this piece. Utilizing flowing spirals, weaving back and forth, playful thick and thin paint in bold, loose strokes, ruby petals emerging and disappearing, all meant to tease and excite your senses.

Winter Light is the newest geranium and daisy painting in the studio today. I am definitely on a red kick this week. I've been growing geraniums for over a decade, and last summer was so wet with so much rain my dry weather loving blossoms barely made an appearance. Imagine my excitement to find a whole aisle of geraniums at the nursery this weekend, just in time for my class at the Dallas Arboretum last Saturday. I'm going to spritz these little plants with water and talk to them and coax them into sticking around for a while. They need to earn their keep and model for a few more paintings! I'm always on the look out for running water. It's by far one of my favorite subjects to paint so I very excited to discover a new little river just a few miles from our house. After spending a few minutes looking at different compositions of the running water and rocks, I choose this view, which, of course, turned out to be one of the more difficult locations to paint from. I had to set my easel up on top of a pile of rocks laying on the river bank and balance on one of the rocks to paint. Whenever I wanted to step back and see my progress, I had to carefully step down the pile of rocks to a little clearing so I could study my painting and then climb back up and make my adjustments. It's things like this that make painting outdoors interesting and a lot of fun.

Ginger Jar Geraniums is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, after a busy weekend teaching at the Dallas Arboretum. I painted geraniums and white daisies for my first class demo on Saturday, and then sunflowers in the afternoon. My feet were tired but my heart was happy - teaching art is definitely becoming my favorite thing to do. We had a fun day painting in the most beautiful gardens in North Texas, and even had sunshine (after a week of rain). The Arboretum classrooms are roomy and have skylights that let in tons of natural light, and the staff and volunteers stay with us all day to lend a hand whenever needed.

I hope you will join me soon for a workshop in Flower Mound Studio, in Fredericksburg, Texas, or right back at the Dallas Arboretum again! You can find more workshop information here. Come paint with me!

Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit

Storm's Coming

If you live anywhere close to Brownwood, TX, take a day trip to view the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit. Sponsored by the Brownwood Art Council, this exhibit attracts artists from all over the state. This year, 130 pieces of art and photography were juried into the show out of the over 350 pieces entered. I was honored to have my "Storm's Coming" chosen for the exhibit. Information for the exhibit is as follows:

Dates: February 5-17
Time: Sun. - 1-4pm; weekdays - 9-6pm; Sat. - 9-4
Reception: Sat. 7-9pm; Awards - 8pm
Depot Civic and Cultural Center
600 E. Depot
Brownwood, Tx

Also, much of the art not juried into the exhibit will be shown at the Art Center, 215 Fisk. Open hours will be the same as the Depot.

A Touch of Green on the Arroyo by David Forks

This is a scene along an arroyo in Big Bend National Park. It was painted from photos taken in July of 2011. Most of the state experienced one of the worst droughts in recent history, and I found it very interesting how the flora nearest the arroyo was green while the majority of the desert plants were barely clinging to life.

The photo of this painting is not very good. I had a very difficult time getting a usable image of this painting because of its' size.

Sans Souci was originally painted over a year ago, but tonight I went in and made quite a few changes and freshened up my fence. I felt a bit like Tom Sawyer, painting that fence and wishing someone would come along whom I could talk into doing it for me. So far, we are having a very mild winter down here in Texas with lots of rain and relatively warm weather. After a record-breaking dry and hot summer, this has been a most welcome change. It's also made for some great weather to get out and paint and that's exactly what I did for this painting. I went to a near by wildlife area and found this scene. I was immediately struck by the quality of light striking the very last leaves on this oak tree. It's late January and this tree is still not giving up the last of its leaves without a fight. Plus with all the rain we've had over the last 2 months, there's actually lots of fresh green growth in the grassy foreground and even a few green saplings coming up in the brush.

BEYOND THE BRIDGE USING MY FINGER AS A BRUSH ON THE I-PAD

THIS was just for fun. Did not have my usual tools with me when wanting to do this landscape drawing. So out came the I-Pad and with my finger and an I-Pad app a quick drawing was done. The new tools that are availabe are just amazing. It was fun and quick way to draw. Completed in about 30 minutes and that was with learning the tools on the app.

Always trying to learn something new and this also gave me new insight on colors and values.

These horses were painted from a photo I took at the Parade of the Horse during the Cowboy Symposium in Lubbock, Texas. I put a light acrylic underpainting on the paper before painting the horses with watercolor. I was fascinated by all the lines created by the horses livery, reins, etc.

Whenever I go to Fort Worth, I pass by this old abandoned church that's just off the highway. Each time I pass it, I think to myself that I really need to stop and paint this place. There's just something about the way the light hits this old building that makes me want to put it on canvas. Well, just before the year ended, I finally made my trip to paint this old church. It was a nice sunny day with just a little chill in the air. After looking around at a few different views, I chose this one because of the shadows. I loved the color in them as the went across the once white walls. The little bit of green grass and shrub sealed the deal for me and I got to painting. I had to paint quickly before the shadows changed too much. By the time I finished this piece, the shadows coming down the boarded up windows along the top had reached the bottom of the windows.

A few days ago, I found out that this painting was juried into the 2012 Plein Air Southwest Salon at the Southwest Gallery in Dallas. This is my first time in this exhibition and I'm very happy to be included with such a great line up of artists. I'll be posting more information about this show as we closer to it in April. This painting will be available for purchase at this show.

We are looking for Nancy “The Guardian” Darling so named because of her help with rescue dogs. She often travels with a large pack of dogs which hampers her ability to shoot but that does not prevent her from trying. She uses the dogs to attract unsuspecting subjects then while they are being distracted...she shoots. It is a devious but very effective plan. I hear she and her pack will be heading up to Alaska to participate in the Iditarod...that may be a false lead...just be on the lookout...

This is truly a mixed media abstract painting with lots of Venetian plaster, red acrylics, stencil and scraffito work with some black flings of paint and oil sticks. I used this as a demo for a short one day texture workshop for some of my Canvas by Canvas peeps after I took the Carolyn Riegelman workshop in Granbury. See my post HERE about the workshop. Rose Arbor is another new picket fence painting in Flower Mound Studio today. After a day in the office working on budget spreadsheets and a 32 page publishing contract, my brain needed red roses and a dose of serenity. A nice mocha coffee with whipped creme and real chocolate shavings on top would also be nice...and a foot massage. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait on those last items. The paintbrushes need washing and the pugs need bedtime walkies. If I hurry, I'll have just enough time to read a chapter or two out of my new Connie Willis book, All Clear, the sequel to her previous book, Blackout. If you like a really excellent time travel story, hers are the absolute best! I had no idea the sequel was out. What a nice surprise.

When you dream do you dream of far away places or just simple objects that will make your day enjoyable. Yes, I do dream of exotic lands but mostly about painting there. But many times I dream of beautiful blue flow china that I find at bargin prices. Sounds crazy doesn't it but the Blue Flow and all there wonderful designs are just plain beautiful. May you have exotic dreams but also simple ones and May you find your easel friendly.

In the Ring of Fire

I've done so much research and studied the Ring of Fire for so long that I almost feel as if I've already been. As I sat looking at a white canvas with a totally different idea of what I was about to paint, something told me to pick up the tube of Crimson Alizarin and coat the canvas. I could not fight this urge. As I painted, I started to see this island emerge and I realized exactly what was popping through the paint. I spread more and more crimson and through in the yellow that you can see breaking through the clouds and know in an instant where I was....this was the ring of fire. As I painted I could feel a story coming through. Looking at this painting you are taken to a beach after an explosion of dust and fire. You are In the Ring of Fire.

Wildfire's Dream

Wildfire's Dream is the latest in the Kentucky Derby series. This is the first year the Kentucky Derby will run at night in it's 138 years of running. I wanted to honor this by creating a painting set in the evening hours where this horse Wildfire dreams of what it will be like to win the Kentucky Derby. Notice the twin spires in the background signifing the race being held in no place other than Churchhill Downs in beautiful Louisville Kentucky. As always, note the five stars and moon...can't paint an outdoors scene without including them.

Delphiniums of Coronado is a new painting in the studio, created for a special client who wanted a painting of a picket fence with delphiniums. She gave me free rein with the design, so I am hoping she likes it when she sees it! This painting is based on the beautiful cottage gardens of Coronado, California, where flower growing is a very serious passtime. Perfect weather, perfect soil, and a giant Flower Show competition each year all combine to give flower junkies like myself a bit of nirvana every time I visit! I am heading back here in just a few weeks, and hope to share photos with you then of my trip.

This is a donation for Alley's House annual fundraiser. It is a contemporary abstract on a 24" x 24" gallery wrap canvas. I used thick, juicy oils and applied them with wide brushes and palette knives. It is always good to give to good causes, and I hope that this one brings in some money for Alley's House and that this painting gets a new home!

Painting Workshop at the Dallas Arboretum taught by Niki Gulley

This painting was inspired by a gorgeous autumn day at the Dallas Arboretum. I was drawn to this magical little spot because it was so tranquil there that day, that you just wanted to sit and enjoy the scenery on this bench nestled across the water. The brilliant colors of the fall foliage, the crystal clear sky, and the soft light raking across the lily pond caught my eye. I liked how the late afternoon shadows were being cast and golden highlights were forming, adding to a peaceful, but happy feeling.

And I must say a little extra bling added by Meaghen and her mom Cindy. This is a torn paper portrait collage of one of my granddaughters that I began as a demo in the Grandbury LGAA workshop HERE. That's her dad with the collage, Brad: Peace but Meaghen can be seen in the slide show below. That was the last of November and before the final varnish today I gave it to Meaghen to add some of her personal ideas around the edges or anywhere she chose.

My friend Joyce Thomas and I painted at Decordova Dam Park today and were very excited to see visitors.

There were tons of pelicans on the beach when we arrived. They were joined by buzzards, seagulls, Canadian geese and ducks. It turned into a pretty day, but there are wind gust up to 50 miles per hour. This is available for purchase - $225.00

Heart's Hyacinths and Sunflowers is the newest painting in the studio. We had a very busy day, with AnnieBee and I hosting a special guest student for a day-long art class. Judy and I painted hyacinths and tiny sunflowers, while AnnieBee and her foster sister, Hannah, supervised. Judy did a beautiful job on her painting, and she and I both agreed one can never have too much bright color!

Hannah appreciated adding a new fan to her list of admirers. As for Anniebee, other than trying to attack her own reflection in the front door panel, barking at her sister, and digging all the stuffing out of her new bed and spitting it on the studio floor, she was a perfect hostess.

Well..we were at the Supreme Court building in Washington DC.,
so I thought an appropriate title would be 'Holding Court' as that is what
they appear to be doing in an abstract sense of the phrase.
Somehow this photo emerged with more ochre colors, and
I loved the difference in this one and 'Who's Calling' that I have
posted previously. I love the light and shadow!

"Ready for Battle"

"Ready for Battle" has been evolving over the years. It started as a watercolor abstract, close your eyes and draw three big objects on your paper. Look at it and add a few lines where needed. Select your color scheme and paint. Well, I didn't like what appeared, so I took I wet brush and got rid of all my hard edges. Then I decided to put some gold paint on it. A sword and shield began to appear. Now Ready for Battle is almost ready.
