"Bravado" American Indian, original painted in oils on a 16"x20"
stretched canvas.
One of my favorite photographers of Native American Indians is Edward S.
Curtis (1868 – 1952).Curtis dropped out of school in the sixth grade, soon
building his own camera, and by the age of seventeen became an apprentice
photographer. Later, he was offered the job
of photographing a group of Native American Indians, which seems to be the
beginning of his artistic life.
So many people love the emotion that Curtis emits from his work. Nearly all of his photos
bring to the viewer a feeling and understanding of the trying times for these
people, most of whom were poor, sick, hungry, and still attempting to keep some
sort of dignity in spite of the horrible hardships they had endured. I tried to capture these hardships in the eyes of this brave warrior.
