This was painted from a photo I took of a yellow canna last fall.  The flower and leaves are transparent watercolor but the background is magenta and black gaouche.  I love the contrast of the transparent colors with the flat gaouche collor.

The Old Mill Study, Barbara Haviland

I always do that.  I like to change my painting up a bit. It is painted on a hardboard panel that has canvas adhered to it.  I have used this method for years.
