Visiting Montepulciano and Wine Tasting in Tuscany with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

12" x 9" oil painting by Niki Gulley Day 2:   TUSCANY ART TREK - Montepulciano Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams On the second day of our Tuscany Art Trek, we set up our easels at a scenic overlook in Montepulciano while the photographers went exploring. The view of the valley below is gorgeous with miles of olive groves and vineyards stretching to the horizon. I chose to paint the blue-domed duomo below set amid the rolling hills and perfectly planted rows about to be harvested. In the afternoon, we visited two wineries and sampled some amazing red wines and the region's prized Vin Santo. Another fantastic day in Tuscany! If you'd like to join us in Tuscany for our next Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Sept. 5th-13th, please let me know. Early registration deadline of Nov. 16th for a $600 savings is quickly approaching! For more details,  e-mail  Niki Gulley  or go to ...

Lesson Two for Art... Seven Elements of Art... SHAPES by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

Lesson Two Seven Elements of ART SHAPE ( We have done Line and this week we are doing Shape.) When contemplating shapes and all the many times I have taught shape to younger students, it consisted of drawings of three shapes and creating a composition with it.   For the example I chose a rectangle, a circle and a triangle.  You can see there are endless combinations for those three objects, but the key is training your eye for composition and what really works with balance to the eye.  There are also other factors, is the surface a square, a rectangle horizontal or vertical? Going a little bit further sharing some ideas that are more fun, and maybe this week I would have time to explore it too... is the idea of creating a mandala.  Originally Hinduism/Buddism, Mandalas have come down through the centuries as part of our art, with many parts filtering into all faiths.    Painted 17th Century Tibetan "Five Deity Mandala ...

Warm Glads and Sunflowers was my class demonstration this morning for my Collierville, Tennessee workshop.  What a great bunch of students from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi and Tennessee - our gracious hostesses Emory and Carolyn Brown brought in a delicious lunch and we took our break at poolside today. Perfect weather, good friends and yummy color - tomorrow we paint blue hydrangeas so stay tuned! Warm Glads is painting number 27 in the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge - let's see if I can reach the goal, despite multiple commissions, traveling out of state to teach a workshop, and spoiling the pugs in the manner to which they are accustomed on an almost daily basis!
