"Standing Witness"©2022  Niki Gulley 16" x 20" textured oil painting Recently, we visited Santa Fe and to escape the heat we ventured up the Santo de Cristo mountains to cool down among the beautiful, refreshing aspen trees. I was attracted to this grove in particular with their beautiful textured white bark and their proximity and angles to each other. I decided to include the sentinels behind, also, to give you a sense of being surrounded by the peaceful forest. Dappled light casts diagonal shadows and causes the grasses to dance and sparkle. I hope you can feel the serenity of this rejuvenating place.   "Simple Life IV" ©2022 Niki Gulley textured oil paint on canvas • framed in natural wood floater frame • 16" x 20" My husband and I were on a road trip when we came across a couple of these white house glowing on the horizon. Set among vibrant green gently rolling hills with the intense blue ocean in the distance, something beckoned us to stop. Maybe it was the quiet beauty of the scene, or the nostalgic tug at a simpler life, but we were both moved to capture the moment. To convey that feeling of a less congested life, I accentuated the the basic shapes of the homes against the simple repetive curves of the hills. Meanwhile a few wispy clouds drift by adding to the tranquility of the moment. I hope you are transported to this memory of our past, before modern life got so complicated. "Natural Textures II" ©2013 Niki Gulley 24" x 24" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Natural Textures is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension and depth.  Hang it alone, pair it with Natural Textures II to create a diptych,  or for a larger space, hang it with Natural Textures III to form a rhythmic triptych. “Aqua Dreams” ©2013 Niki Gulley 36” x 60” textured oil on canvas When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature. If you would like to see my textured oil paintings in person, please stop by my booth at the Wells Street Art Fair in downtown Chicago this weekend. Wells Street Art Fair June 8th & 9th • 10am – 8pm Chicago, IL • on N. Wells St., Booth #308 on N. Wells St., between Goethe & Division chicagoevents.com/event.cfm?eid=14...

“Rushing Desires” ©2011 Niki Gulley 60” x 36” textured oil on canvas Charging down its stone cut course, torrents of water rush through grey boulders past green and gold bracken. Headlong and unrestrained the waters crash downstream, while above they splash into the airy distance a glowing, hazy tiara of misty sunlight. Thick brushstrokes of radiant oils define the powerful landscape carrying your eye through a complex composition of dynamic diagonals cleaved with the vertical cascade, caressed with a delicate crossing of gold dusted branches. A painting of power and energy balanced by graceful strokes of beauty, I wanted “Rushing Desires” to be about texture, movement, mystery and the cathartic feeling in nature. To see Rushing Desires and more of Niki Gulley’s textured oil paintings, visit her booth, #120, at the Wells Street Art Show this weekend in downtown Chicago. chicagoevents.com/event.cfm?eid=141 Or, e-mail Niki Gulley for more information on her contemporary landscape painti...
