"Purple Haze" - original watercolor

PURPLE HAZE by Debbie Cannatella 26"x20" transparent watercolor (32"x26" FR) Taking a break from the wildlife painting, I did a half dozen of fun, contemporary landscapes.  This particular one was recently juried into an exhibition in Corpus Christi.  I needed to step back from so much realism!  This is one of a series of paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. To order limited edition giclee prints, see my Prints page. For more works on paper see my website   or contact me through my gallery at Studio C Gallery .

"Emerging" - original watercolor

EMERGING by Debbie Cannatella 22"x30" transparent watercolor (30"x38" FR) This is probably one of my very favorite paintings that I've done this past year while painting for my solo exhibition. I just love the visual texture of alligator hide, and being a South Louisiana native, these monstrous creatures are all too well known. I thoroughly enjoyed creating the textured pattern, putting my decades as a highway designer to good use while drawing the tributaries linking one are to the next, like a network of roads. I wanted this guy emerging from the pigment. I suspect it won't be the last of gator paintings I will do, but he will hang in the gallery, looking at a long wall of birds! This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. "I Got This, Ma!" - original watercolor

I Got This, Ma! by Debbie Cannatella 30"x22" transparent watercolor (38"x30" FR) I hadn't planned on devoting much of these past two years on painting aviary art.  Birds were never my "thing" and I never wanted to turn into an "old bird lady" or be labeled as such. But the glorious thing about living in Corpus Christi is it being an intersection of two major flyways during migration time and I have grown to love bird watching. I happened upon these cattle egrets just after hatching season when hundreds of babies were beginning to fledge... mowhawks and all. This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. "BUHO DE ORO" - original watercolor

BUHO DE ORO by Debbie Cannatella 30"x22" transparent watercolor (38"x30" FR) This golden barn owl was so compelling I had to put it on paper.  I saw him in an exhibit at a Falconer's show in a Renaissance Festival. It was selected by the curator for the invitation cover for my upcoming exhibition. It can be ordered in a limited edition giclee print on my website here . This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. "Spotted You" - original watercolor

SPOTTED YOU by Debbie Cannatella 22"x30" transparent watercolor (30"x38" FR) The Clouded Leopard is a smaller cat than the leopards I have painted in the past, but this one was most compelling and I had to paint her as a companion piece to "Prey Tell", previously posted. This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. "Koi Pond 10"

KOI POND 10 by Debbie Cannatella 26"x40" transparent watercolor (34"x48" FR) Painting on an oversized watercolor sheet for a 5-foot tall artist isn't always easy, especially when working on a large drafting table. It is an effort not to lay my clothing into the wet paper and this composition background has to move fast and loose. But, I enjoy painting koi, carp, and goldfish as much as I love watching them in a pond. This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. "Sentinel" - original watercolor

SENTINEL by Debbie Cannatella 22"x30" transparent watercolor (30"x38" FR) "Hobbs" the great blue heron was an injured bird with a mangled leg that was rehabilitated at the ARC, the Animal Rehabilitation Clinic on Mustang Island here near Corpus Christi. A volunteer worker who helped take care of Hobbs asked me to come do a photo shoot with him so that I could paint a commissioned piece for her. Though Hobbs was rehabbed and released into the wild, he returns every day for a fishy snack, and right on cue, he flew in for a treat. After completing the commission, I had tons of photos of Hobbs left, so he is now featured in a number of my paintings. This particular painting won an award in the spring 2012 Exhibition of the Watercolor Society of South Texas annual exhibition.  This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Cor...

"Haunted" - original watercolor

HAUNTED by Debbie Cannatella 26"x40" transparent watercolor (34"x48" FR) As a child I wanted a spider monkey for a pet and my mom would answer "I'd rather have a horse in the house", but my interest in monkeys never stopped and one can always find me at the monkey exhibit when visiting a zoo.  This guy was at a zoo in St. Paul and was scratching and fidgeting the entire time I photographed him. Suddenly he turned and looked dead-on with this haunted expression and a connection was made. It was emotionally jolting for me and I had to paint him. I always begin with the eyes... and we developed a relationship during the painting of this guy.. This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. "Prey Tell" - original watercolor

PREY TELL by Debbie Cannatella 22"x30" transparent watercolor (30"x38" FR) Leopards are beautiful and all the large cats have a fluidity and grace... yet also a power that is unyielding Usually one can find me near the monkey exhibits in zoos, but the next stop is always the large cats. This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. To order limited edition giclee prints, see my Prints page. For more works on paper see my website   or contact me through my gallery at Studio C Gallery .

"Landing" - original watercolor

LANDING by Debbie Cannatella 30"x22" transparent watercolor (38"x30" FR) Originally from South Louisiana, I was glad to be in the land of the brown pelican again when we moved to Corpus Christi TX. I have a fascination with pelicans, particularly the saltwater loving brown pelican. I can watch them glide just inches above the surface of the gulf for hours and a formation of them is captivating. This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. To order limited edition giclee prints, see my Prints page. For more works on paper see my website   or contact me through my gallery at Studio C Gallery.

"Waiting Room" - original watercolor

WAITING ROOM by Debbie Cannatella 22"x30" transparent watercolor (30"x38" FR) Scarlet Ibis have brilliant color, which lured me into painting these birds. This is one of a series of wildlife paintings that will be in a new one-woman solo exhibition "The Natural World" in the Kuchera Gallery at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, Texas for the month of November 2013. Old Salt

OLD SALT 26"x20" transparent watercolor by Debbie Cannatella, lws This uppity pelican wasn't too pleased when I interrupted his nap to sketch him and take photos. In the short time I've lived in Corpus Christi, I have renewed my love of shore birds and turtles. I enjoyed the time I spent painting this guy - so much so, that I painted a second one of him, that I'll upload later. Title: "Old Salt", a 26"x20" transparent watercolor on 260lb.
