Palette Knife Oil Painting from Venice by Niki Gulley

"Venetian Textures II" ©2022 Niki Gulley 16" x 12" textured oil on canvas panel  I started this piece during our Plein Air / Photography Art Trek Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I lead in Venice, Italy. We had painted several other grand locations, but decided on day three to paint a more intimate vignette of the canals. Since the whole city is on water, I love how their "garage doors" are actually for their boats! In this painting, I wanted to focus on all of the wonderful architectural textures and age of the homes as seen in the peeling stucco, crumbling bricks and weathered wood. Luckily I had a steady stream of gondolas passing as I was painting so I could add one in to set the mood. "Flowing into Spring" Palette Knife Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

"Flowing into Spring" ©2022 Niki Gulley SOLD • 24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame Just Sold!  I painted this scene from the Dallas Arboretum on location when the weather was beautiful and the spring buds were in full bloom. I love tulips being one of the first flowers to announce that winter has officially ended, so I focused on these colorful red and white striped ones in the foreground, which contrast so well against the complimentary green leaves and grasses. I also liked how their height leads you back into the distant flower beds and onto the Degolyer house in the background, so I chose this vertical panorama format to accentuate that feeling. Loaded with thick oil paint, texture and movement, I hope you can feel the joy that spring is in the air! For more details on my other Texas paintings, please e-mail  Niki Gulley. "Rhapsody in Bloom II" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Rhapsody in Bloom II" ©2022 Niki Gulley 20" x 20" textured oil painting I painted these cheerful tulips from life in my backyard garden. With all of our rain this year, I had a bumper crop and wanted to capture the joy I felt seeing them signaling that winter was finally over and spring had begun! Created with palette knife and thick paint, this piece is bursting with color and texture. Blurring out the background, you can focus on each individual flower. Creating a circular composition within the square format creates a harmony and flow, while unblended diagonal marks add to the energy and happiness of the moment. I hope these tulips brighten your day and lift your spirits, too. *** E-mail  Niki Gulley  for more information on my tulip and contemporary floral paintings. "Rooted Together" from Monet's Garden by Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Rooted Together" ©2022 Niki Gulley 24" x 12" textured oil painting on canvas  Rooted Together was inspired from a trip we took to Monet’s Gardens outside of Paris. Being a lover of impressionist paintings, I was awestruck standing in the footsteps of one of my favorite painters! The gardens have been maintained immacuately and I could see exactly where Monet painted his paintings. I’ve always loved pÃ¥urple irises and was particularly drawn to this view with the two irises entangled together. Off in the distance, you can see Monet’s picturesque house with that spectacular view of his garden. E-mail  Niki Gulley  for more information on my contemporary floral paintings. New "Simple Life IV" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Simple Life IV" ©2022 Niki Gulley textured oil paint on canvas • framed in natural wood floater frame • 16" x 20" My husband and I were on a road trip when we came across a couple of these white house glowing on the horizon. Set among vibrant green gently rolling hills with the intense blue ocean in the distance, something beckoned us to stop. Maybe it was the quiet beauty of the scene, or the nostalgic tug at a simpler life, but we were both moved to capture the moment. To convey that feeling of a less congested life, I accentuated the the basic shapes of the homes against the simple repetive curves of the hills. Meanwhile a few wispy clouds drift by adding to the tranquility of the moment. I hope you are transported to this memory of our past, before modern life got so complicated. "Rooted Together" from Monet's Garden by Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Rooted Together" ©2021 Niki Gulley 24" x 12" textured oil painting on canvas When we were Paris last time we had to take a side trip to visit the hallowed ground where Monet created some of his amazing paintings. Of course it was a fantastic setting for flowers especially leading to his house in the background. Since irises are one of my favorite flowers, I had to make them the star. The purple work well against the other pastel colors. E-mail  Niki Gulley  for more information on my contemporary floral paintings. "Flowing into Spring" Palette Knife Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

"Flowing into Spring" ©2021 Niki Gulley 24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame The Arboretum in Dallas is such an amazing resource for us that I can't help but take advantage of it. They always have a spectacular display of tulips announcing that spring has arrived and it is time to put away your winter clothing. I chose this spot with the variegated tulips set against the rows of flowers, along with the Degolyer house in the distance in order to give the composition a sense of scale. "Visions of Azaleas" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Niki Gulley

"Visions of Azaleas" ©2020 Niki Gulley 24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame Painted on location, I set up my easel in front of these prolific azalea bushes along Turtle Creek near my home. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark.  Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Painted with palette knife and lots of texture, I hope you can feel the beauty and energy of a perfect spring day.
