"Lorie" by Nathalie Kelley

I saw "Lorie" at a craft show. When I saw her hat (not cowboy) and her sweet smile I knew I wanted to paint her. I needed to catch just the right light, so we stepped to the door which just happily happened to be red. YeeHaw! And her red plaid shirt, perfect!!! This is day 3 of the 30 paintings in 30 days hosted by Leslie Saeta. Watercolor -11"x15" on Arches paper.

"Tom Orsak" - Nathalie Kelley, watercolor

"Tom Orsak" is an artist and a friend. Tom is a plein air artist and I love the hat he wears when he is painting outside.  I was delighted when he agreed to let me paint his portrait. He and his wife, Jeane live in Harriet, Texas near San Angelo. This is day 2 of the 30 paintings in 30 days hosted by Leslie Saeta.

INDIAN ARTISAN by Carol Peterson

"Indian Artisan" by Carol Peterson 21" x 15" watercolor $1000.00 This is an indian who was selling his work at a port in Mexico.  I think he is often there since a friend of mine came home with his photo from a cruise recently.  His costume was quite elaborate and I had to simplify it quite a bit or the painting would have been overwhelmed with the patterns.  I prefer portraits with fairly uncluttered backgrounds and hence the dark red and blue background here.

PERUVIAN WEAVER by Carol Peterson

"Peruvian Weaver" by Carol Peterson ( carolpeterson@suddenlink.net ) 20" x 15" watercolor $800.00   This woman was weaving in a store in Lima, Peru and was wearing traditional dress.  She looked up as I started to take photos and I caught this pensive expression.  I used my usual liquid acrylic underpainting but in this case it interfered with the look I was trying to obtain in the painting.  As a result I covered the background with a mixture of gouache in green and black.

BELLIGERENT by Carol Peterson

"Belligerent" by Carol Peterson ( carolpeterson@suddenlink.net ) 15" x 11" watercolor $400.00 This girl was at a restaurant where I was eating.  She and her sister didn't want to be there and showed it.  I enjoyed her expressive face and was surprised when she let me take a photo.  This painting was done with an acrylic underpainting, bright red background, and a lot of masking.  I am thinking of painting her again in a large format with a distinctive background.

AURORA by Carol Peterson

" Aurora " by Carol Peterson 15" x 11" watercolor This is a portrait of one of my grandchildren.  I found her very difficult to paint and this is about my third try.  The lighting in this photo was from the back and resulted in some strange highlights on the face.  I try to paint all my grandchildren and I thought she would be the last but we now have a new baby so I will be doing him in a couple of years.
