Right on Red by Pamela Blaies

Pears and Cherries 16" x 12" oil on linen I usually tone my canvas with a neutral, earthy color like raw umber. With this one, I tried something a little different and toned it red. Specifically, I mixed Alizarin Crimson with Burnt Sienna (I'm pretty sure this is Winsor Newton's version of Transparent Oxide Red.) Anyway, since I planned to let some of the tone show through in places, I figured the red would be interesting with the bright, red cherries scattered throughout the composition. It turned out to be a nice effect - glad I took the risk. I love to share my art and inspiration. Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

First Painting of the New Year by Pamela Blaies

Blue Bud Vase and Mandarins 9" x 12" oil Happy New Year! Here is my first painting of 2013. I did a study of a similar composition to this a few days ago and was planning to make this a second study. But I liked the setup so much that I decided to go ahead and get out my oil primed linen. This color combination and ultra-dramatic lighting is stunning to me. It was a fun challenge to keep it fresh and loose when painting so small. I think I'd like to paint something like this again as a larger painting. I love to share my art and inspiration. The Orange by Sandra Reeves Cutrer

"The Orange" by Sandra Reeves Cutrer It is rare that I paint a still life, with my main focus these days being toward wild life and portraits, but these super juicy McIntosh apples were sitting on my counter, waiting to be painted. I grabbed the orange from the frig, placed the fruit it on top of an old denim cloth, set up my light, and went for the challenge. I feel that I have truly captured the beauty of the apples and the dominance of the big, bold orange! Country Icons - woven watercolors

Two identical watercolors were painted, cut into vertical and horizontal strips, then woven together to create one piece, 22x15 inches.  This kitchen still life scene is featuring blue and white antique spongeware, red grapes, lemons, and fresh zinnias.  The new woven painting will be mounted onto a support, matted then framed and will look great in anyone's home.
