Early Garden Purple Iris by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Early Garden Purple Iris by Nancy Medina 16X12 Oil on Archival Panel  Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Follow Me on Facebook Early Garden Purple Iris is based on a scene from my garden today where my purple irises are already blooming! Texas has such fickle weather, we had 35 degrees one day, and 80 degrees the next, and I suppose these purple blossoms got kicked into gear - I'm sure MUCH too early for the real iris experts taste. These bulbs originated from Argyle Acres Iris Garden, and are tiny flowers, very dark purple, and come from a vintage line of award winning irises. I love a flower with a pedigree, don't you? My flowers and my pugs both come from champion lineage, while the artist is from much humbler stock.... The days are counting down until my last day at the corporate office next Wednesday - the last day of my magazine editor day job! I would be fibbing if I didn't admit I have moments of sheer ...

Garden Gate Tulip Path of the Dallas Arboretum by Nancy Medina

Garden Gate Tulip Path by Nancy Medina  16X12 Oil on Archival Panel Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Follow Me on Facebook Garden Gate Tulip Path is the newest daily painting, as I count down the opening of the tulips at the Dallas Arboretum in the next few weeks. My deep purple irises have opened in my garden this week. They are probably wondering what season this is, considering we had 35 degree weather one day, and 80 degree weather the next! I'm planning a photo excursion to the Arboretum during Dallas Blooms very soon - and packing for my March 23 flower painting workshop there. Stay tuned to my art blog, I'll be sharing my favorite photos with you!

Ragdoll Red Tulip and the Dallas Blooms Festival by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Ragdoll Red Tulip by Nancy Medina 8X10 Oil on Archival Panel Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Follow Me on Facebook Ragdoll Red Tulip is the newest work on the easel, and I am counting the minutes until the tulips begin opening at the Dallas Arboretum for the Dallas Blooms Festival . I think the timing will be perfect, everything is scheduled to be in full bloom right after my last day at work next Thursday! The azaleas, daffodils, pansies, cherry blossoms, tulips, and scores of other plants will all be competing for the brightest color award. I think you and I should be the judge. Let's arrive early with our cameras, say around 10 am, get a few gazillion photos, and then have the Tower O' Desserts and High Tea in the tea room. We can nibble a sandwich or two just for show, and then polish off every pastry with gusto. Let's order two pots of that super delish fancy tea they serve, you know the kind where it comes...

Blue Jean Bluebonnets by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Blue Jean Bluebonnets by Nancy Medina 12X12 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Follow Me on Facebook  I've been exercising my landscape brushes lately, and the new collection of paintings would not be complete without at least one new bluebonnet, don't you agree? Blue Jean Bluebonnets reminded me so much of one of my favorite pairs of extra soft, extra worn jeans from my teen years, back when pale blue denim was in style and super wide bell bottoms. I've had lots of trips down memory lane lately, staying with mom and helping go through paperwork, favorite books and records, as well as a few terrifying photos of myself with big hair and glitter blue eyeshadow from the 1980s which you'll notice I'm not including here.  Also in the mix was a great deal of birdwatching, and the little feeder attached to mom's kitchen window attracted more than just birds. AnnieBee got up close and ...

Blue Iris Balboa Sunset by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Blue Iris Balboa Sunset by Nancy Medina 16X12 Oil on Archival Panel Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Follow Me on Facebook Blue Iris Balboa Sunset is my newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, as I pack up paints and palette for my landscape workshop tomorrow in North Texas . I'm looking forward to visiting Balboa Park again in April, when I'll be on Coronado Island in Southern California for my annual solo show painting in the garden at Art and Frames by Wood Gallery . I'm working on a whole set of new four-foot container garden paintings for the show, so stop by and say hello and enjoy refreshments and art in the garden. The gallery is right in the heart of downtown, just a few doors down from Starbucks, so grab a latte and come on by! I'm sharing one of my favorite photos on my art blog today from Balboa Park here, my husband, Carlos, taking a stroll through the gardens with a jiggly wiggly lovely lit...

Spring Hope Hydrangeas and a Dallas Arboretum Tour by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Spring Hope Blue Hydrangeas by Nancy Medina 8X10 Oil on Archival Panel Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Follow Me on Facebook Spring Hope is the newest blue batch of blossoms in the studio, while the studio models are still fresh! Today the hubby and I paid a visit to the Dallas Arboretum, a few weeks before Dallas Blooms Festival kicks off March 1. The daffodils are already making an appearance, and the pansies and decorative kale were so bright and purple and gorgeous. The hubby especially liked the decorative kale, mentioning more than once that he wished he had brought along a bottle of salad dressing... It was a bit chilly with the breeze off the lake, so we warmed up in the Tea Room with fancy cucumber sandwiches and Harney and Sons brand tea. What a treat! Get your comfy shoes on and a warm scarf and let's take the tour together on my art blog today - enjoy!

Take Flight Purple Pansies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Take Flight Purple Pansies by Nancy Medina 12X12 Palette Knife/Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site My winter garden is a bit meager, but a few pansies are determined to make their appearance and have survived two small snowfalls. I love their whimsical, ruffley edges. I began this painting with a completely transparent underpainting in yellows and greens, and then built my clay pot with Transparent Oxide Red. I used my dry paper towel to lift out highlight areas, and then shaped the pansies with brush and palette knife. The last step was laying in the bright opaque greens and the blue sky peeping through to give the flowers light and air. After a day with overcast gray skies, it felt like time for some bright color! Pansies with the models on the back porch

Nodding Off Poppies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Nodding Off Poppies by Nancy Medina SOLD 12X12 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Nodding Off Poppies is the newest poppy in the easel, after a long series of poppies, and I sense the muses are pointing me toward hydrangeas and irises next. I let my muses dictate my journey when I can, reining them in only when needed for a commission work or for a classroom lesson involving a particular floral setup. Next in line - blues and lavenders to come on the easel in Flower Mound Studio!

The Gathering - Poppies in Red by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

The Gathering - Poppies in Red by Nancy Medina 12X12 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site The Gathering, Poppies in Red, is the newest red poppy painting in the studio, a companion to Surrounded Poppies , and I am slowly but surely running out of shelves for all the wet paintings to perch upon around here! I packed up the boss, her fav toy du jour and cushy pillow and headed to Mom's house today. This evening Mom showed me how to make a chocolate sheet cake from scratch and it was just so delish fresh out of the oven we both had three pieces before it cooled. AnnieBee supervised, so it was perfect!

Water Glass Daisies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Water Glass Daisies by Nancy Medina 12X12 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Water Glass Daisies is the newest work in the studio today, but was absolutely necessary because the daisies were looking all fresh and perky and crying out to be painted! The hubby was also wondering this morning where all the oranges went off to. In the morning they will miraculously reappear in the kitchen bowl, it will be our secret where they've been hanging out all week. The Daisies take a bow!

Sweet Home Sunset by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Sweet Home Sunset by Nancy Medina 16X12 Oil on Archival Panel Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Sweet Home is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, on this New Year's Day. I've been thinking a lot about those I love today, and the dear friends I have made this year. Networking through art is a beautiful way to connect. I have come to believe that artists by nature tend to be very good people. I've never had a student who did not have the gift and ability to become a great artist. I have never met an artist who did not have a giving nature. Maybe it is the makeup of an artist's soul that they see beauty, and they also have the ability to see beauty in others.  One thing I know for certain, searching for something good, striving to create something beautiful in this world, always leads you to a good place. It creates good energy, it draws blessings, attracts good karma, it fills you with a spark of that ...

Vintage Hydrangeas and Pink Roses by Nancy Medina Commissioned Work 24X20  Oil on Museum Quality Linen Panel Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Vintage Hydrangeas and Pink Roses is a commissioned work in the studio this week. When I'm not at the easel or obeying my supervisors, I help out with the Dallas Ft. Worth Pug Rescue's newsletter. We are incredibly fortunate to have a group of professional photographers who give their time and talent to make our rescue pugs shine. Our senior and special needs pugs had a glamour photo shoot last week in Flower Mound, Texas, in the photography studio of Jenny Froh . Saucy Senior Bonnie Jean is pictured on my art blog today in our holiday card. Her fondest wish is to have a forever home for Christmas. Happy Thanksgiving to you, I hope you are surrounded by love this holiday season! You can read more about DFW Pug Rescue  our Web site at www.dfwpugs.com.

Dreamstar Stargazer Lilies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Dreamstar Stargazer Lilies by Nancy Medina 14X14 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site The studio is smelling fragrant this evening, and not just because I have pugs lying about on pillows hither and yon. The stargazers beckoned in the grocery store this morning, so I shifted gears to pinks and gave the red geraniums the day off! This has been a banner week for art here in Flower Mound Studio. I received word that my painting, Dinner Date Daisies and Sunflowers, won best of show for the Annual Shining Stars Art Show and Benefit. I'm so honored to have won! Stargazer Studio models take a bow!

Dreamsicle Daisies and Sunflowers by Nancy Medina 12X12 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Dreamsicle Daisies and Sunflowers is the newest work in Flower Mound Studio, after a couple of whirlwind weeks of travel back and forth to Denver. Embrace the Light Poppies Step by Step by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Embrace the Light Poppies by Nancy Medina 16X20 Oil on Linen Board Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site I painted poppies again today, the poppy siren song I've been heeding lately here in Flower Mound Studio is not quite finished. I wanted to take a loose approach, so I started with a slightly rough surface, adding texture to my gesso. I placed large, quick patches of some cool transparents for the greens, and then red transparents for the flowers. I had to work quickly to get everything blended before the colors dried. For the final step, I used bright opaques. Visit my art blog today to see the painting step by step!

Poppy Painting in Red and White by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Poppies in Red and White by Nancy Medina 11X14 Oil on Cradled Panel Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Poppies in Red and White is the newest small work, another painting completed in my Mom's kitchen amidst the laughter, noise, cooking, favorite taped programs, barking, and general hubbub of my family's life. I love spending time with Mom on the farm, it is such an escape from the city. Her home is on 15 acres, mostly filled with ancient oak trees, and stepping into her back yard after dark is a dream come true for anyone who loves to see stars. And it's true, the stars really are big and bright just a bit due east of the Heart of Texas...!

First Bloom Sunflower by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

First Bloom Sunflower by Nancy Medina 8X10 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Our first sunflower of the season bloomed in our back yard today. It's a pretty little thing, and I've shared it with you on my art blog. It has long, finger-shaped petals and a necklace of bright yellow and brown spotted pearls around its belly. The petals are all different shapes and some are long and some are short and some are missing and others line up nicely. This is exactly how I like to paint sunflowers.  Tomorrow I will be driving to East Texas to spend some time with my Mom, who is not doing well. Her health has been deteriorating for some time, and the doctor today she may now be in congestive heart failure. We'll stay up late and watch true crime TV and she can show me all the shows she taped that she saved for me to watch because they were so good. It will be absolutely wonderful.
