"East Lucy Vincent Beach", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel. On a cool, but windless evening I walked down the beach and around the backside of the cliff. I last painted here in the spring. It was surprising to see how much cliff had eroded in the last few storms since then. The dark hole in the top of the middle cliff is totally hollowed out down to the beach beside the brighter orange cliff. "Tea Lane Sheep", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel. Ownership of this farm has just passed from an old island family to a young farmer and a land-lease to a young farming family. Until last week the barn was half hidden by a large stand of bamboo. The foreground field, idle and uncultivated the past few years, will be transformed by the sheep, and later cattle, from this beautiful meadow of Little Bluestem grass to a more traditional greener, grazing pasture. "Harbor Moon", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel. At different times, I have sailed by, walked by, driven by, gotten close and moved afar to view this black hulled vessel. The large shape and oh so dark a black is not a color subject I would normally choose. But the mystery of ship drew me to it. I chose an evening with a falling breeze and donned my winter gear to keep me warm in the cold of the shadows as I worked. The ticking time bomb of the leaving light kept me focused and working fast. Painting from top to bottom, as I got to the details of docks and boat, the moon unexpectedly appeared. While it climbed the heavens as I moved my paints, I held my breath for fear my time was up and it would disappear before it reached it full splendor just about the eastern cloud bank... "Ever Changing View", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel. When I was much younger, this path was a jeep track you could drive down on to park on the beach. If I venture much past the front of the beach shack now, I would drop 10 feet onto the sand below. "Overcast", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel. Finding the right days to work on this piece were frustrating. The first attempt was a fogfilled evening, but there is so much in the painting that I could not finish it before dark. The second time the sun came out. It sets this time of year just over the middle fishing shack. It was blinding and I gave up and went fishing instead. Third time was again foggy. Great, but it soon turned to rain and I had to rush for cover. "Racing Down Creek", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel. During gloomy, overcast days it is sometimes hard to find good subject matter to paint. The light is flat. It should be easy to capture since it does not change much, whereas on a sunny day shadows constantly shift or leave altogether. "Bittersweet Farm", this is a small painting, 6" x 8", oil on canvas panel. I have always wanted to do a painting of Bittersweet Farm since I was little and use to ride my bicycle past it in the summers. This gable end faces toward the road and makes it seem massive even from a distance. I believe it was built as a dairy barn and now is in use as a horse barn. Whenever I see it cut and bailed, or rolled, I just want to paint it, to capture that fleeting moment from field to barn.
