After attending two fantastic workshops, I found myself without focus and momentum to work in the studio.  Each time I did (thinking "just get in there and get busy and this will pass"), my attempts to paint larger were so bad that I would end up with wipe out after wipe out.  In between these times I would paint smaller and read about art with my books and magazines and on the internet.  Although my blogging stopped I have continued to look and admire all the work on your blogs.  I've reviewed my notes from workshops and watched DVDs.  It's been a difficult time.  Thankfully, my good friend and artist  Linda Reedy  listened patiently with my complaints and offered good advice and a wonderful book that I am now reading and will re-read again and again.   The War of Ar t  by Steven Pressfield is a book that speaks to every creative person tha...

This one was rather experimental.   When I saw this cluster of wildflowers, I knew that I had no interest in going for the detail.  The impact, for me, came from color and pattern of the grouping. So, I decided to go after it in a very direct manner.  By the time I was finishing I was having a lot of fun moving lots of paint around with the knife and brush.  Practicing to handle the knife so as not to overwork the paint was very instructive to me on handling the brush as well. Against the Tide Mark Nesmith Oil on Oil Primed Linen Panel 5" x 7" 2014 Click here to purchase this painting. The weather hasn't exactly felt like Spring around here lately, but that hasn't kept me away from the beach.  The Texas Gulf Coast is only about 45 minutes away, and just a bit farther down the highway is one of my favorite beaches, Bolivar Flats. Bolivar Flats is right before the ferry landing to Galveston.  It's a favorite of bird watchers, but being so close to Galveston and farther down from Crystal, most of the tourists don't frequent the flats.  I like that because there's often hardly anyone else around. Here's a row of pylons heading out in the ocean.  I've always loved the look of these posts being reclaimed by the ocean.  It's the beach equivalent of my favorite pine trees.  I've drawn and painted similar scenes quite often.  Eventually I'll settle on a composition and make a larger painting.
