Color of Summer 10" x 20" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel Contemporary Landscape Painting Pushing, pulling, scraping and laying in the oils with my palette knife gives this painting an impressionistic feeling.  I started with an underpainting using a brush.  After looking at it for a couple of months on my easel, I decided I needed to take a different approach and repainted it with the knife.  I am much more satisfied with the outcome, especially with the color relationships.  The burnt orange contrasting against the violet and greens makes it pop. The colors of the landscape remind me of how a hot and dry summer day feels....therefore, the name, "Color of Summer".  I can't wait to put a frame on this panel once I varnish it.  This painting will be for sale once it dries.  Contact  Kay  for purchasing info.  Thanks,  Kay

Lost 12" x 16" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Contemporary Palette Knife Painting Floral Landscape I named this painting "Lost" because I was totally lost in it with my palette knife.  Lost in a good way, just letting my mixing skills kick in, and allowing  the painting to happen.  The colors are harmonious because I mixed my piles of luscious oils as I worked through the canvas.  My palette was covered with greens, lavenders, greys and corals.  This landscape painting couldn't get much more abstract, as I was focused on the colors and how they looked in relationship to each other.  There is plenty of texture and paint built up on the canvas, creating more interest for the viewer.  This painting is drying at the studio.  Contact  ME  with any comments or questions.  Thanks for looking....Kay

I'm usually a daylight painter.  Mostly because I haven't arranged to get out and paint at night.    We've had so much rain, recently, and I've had this idea for over a year that I'd like to try painting downtown Austin.  Just looks like a lot of fun whenever I've seen wet nights treated by some of my friends and favorite painters.  So, I drove into town hoping to catch the evening light and wet streets.    I discovered that controlling values was imperative to pull off the effect I was after.  This was finished in the studio as I tried to get things into balance.  I like the mysterious quality of the dark shapes played against the effects of direct and reflected light.  There's also a kind of romantic feeling that moves my sense of interpretation.  Interpretation is what fascinates me in painting.  The desire to pull something out that has little to do with description, but a lot to do with the design and paint handli...

Painting today a stuffed Elephant. At first I thought I didn't have enough time and it was to late and missed my chance for the day, bummer. I pondered a bit on doing one anyway without the magnificent light show that I've been seeing this month and almost decided to move on and do something else.  Oh wait, what's this, sure enough it showed up with a vengeance. This old station building is in Brownfield TX. Every time I go through there, I have to look for it, and see what the shadows look like!  This is poured instead of being painted with a brush. I still may do some tweaking on it.  Once its poured, you have to work with what you have. It is quite a challenge.  I really like the texture you get with this technique.  I thought my first pouring was too dark, but by going even darker under the drive way, it seemed to work.  This is 1/2 sheet so it is large. 22x28 framed.

"Verdant" 5x7, Oil on Linen Panel My Mother and Father in law have the most beautiful piece of land that I love to paint when I visit. My favorite time of day is when the green is lush and yellow. The Walnut trees that line the front yard are full of beautiful twists and are furrowed with age. It's also not too hot in the shade. I used Cadmium Yellow Lemon for that bright green with Ultramarine Blue and some added Permanent Intense Red.

Not that I don't like it, I could get used to it, but being a gal from Texas, we were taught "The Hug" rather than "The Kiss" and so going in for the hug and suddenly getting lips on your cheek is like discovering you're doing the Cotton Eyed Joe when your partner was intent on the Texas Two Step. It's really just a different point of view on a greeting, and one that is much warmer, even than a hug. Like I said, I could get used to this whole European thing!
