“Sky High” ©2016 Niki Gulley 48" x 24” textured oil painting on wrap around canvas In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the joy of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by overhead. To accentuate that feeling, I chose this tall vertical canvas, giving you a sense of scale and perspective. Working with warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky sweeping strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place. "Peaceful Pursuit," Tuscany ©2016 Niki Gulley  30" x 48” textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas This painting is inspired from a trip to Tuscany we took a few years ago when my husband, who is a professional photographer, and I spent about a week scouring every inch of the countryside for the best poppy fields and views. I was particularly drawn to this peaceful scene, even if the poppies weren’t as prolific as in other fields. I loved the calming, sweeping shapes of the hills and the vibrant reds contrasting against the softer grasses and white wildflowers. The road beckons you back to the stone farmhouse in the distance, while dramatic voluminous clouds dance across the sky, mimicking the foreground shapes and creating a sense of harmony. Repeating colors throughout, I love how the Impressionists used vibrant hues to add to the mood of a scene and create flow, so I brought my contemporary approach with broad strokes and thick texture to their traditions. I've had the photo-reference for this a long time. I selected it for today's exercise. I'm currently trying to pay close attention to shape and value relationships. With the shapes, I'm practicing getting plenty of variety. No two shapes similar in size and profile. With the values, I'm always trying to group the big simple families of light and dark. This helps to make better mixing decisions that will give the painting impact. This one required some careful value reads for me to unravel what was going on. Once I was satisfied with my rough three-tone block-in (Light grow, Shadow group, and Mid-value group), it was fun just inventing with paint to match the value groups. Chaste Trees in the Wild 12x16 oil on canvas I was delighted to see the warm purples and pinks of the Chaste Trees in Benbrook last week.  I didn't have the time to paint on location so I snapped a few images while the color was strong. Busy Busy 40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas  Contemporary Abstract Painting Layers of grey blues covered the canvas in the beginning, then I applied fresh color with the palette knife, scraping it back.  After several sessions with this canvas I pulled out a wide brush and some oil sticks drawing in lines and shapes.  That gave the painting movement on the canvas, adding interest and depth.     I pushed and pulled the paint around, moving it until I was satisfied.   Once I stood back from my easel I could see that the corals, pinks and oranges gave it energy.  The blues, greens and turquoise are cooler and give the painting balance along with a variety of lines, brush strokes, palette knife.  There are hints of yellow and creamy yellow in the painting....hidden under the layers.  The sides of the canvas are  painted in the grey-blue color, and framing is optional.  Ready to have a new home, BUSY BUSY will be dry a...

I find my small daily exercise paintings, like this one, to be my best source of experimentation and inspiration.   My first step is to decide on what I'm trying to learn during the session, which lasts up to 2 hours.  Then, before I paint, to give it the same design considerations and emphasis I would a larger painting.  The nice thing is I can learn as much doing these small paintings as the larger ones.  The biggest pay-off has been how it keeps me discovering and focusing on things in my work that are developing daily.  When paintings go badly, as they occasionally will, it isn't as emotionally depressing as when I've invested a lot of work in a larger painting.  Painting the small studies every day lets the bad ones tell me what I need to work on next.  PEDERNALES PATTERNS ©Jimmy Longacre 2016 6x8 oil on canvas panel Jimmy Longacre subjective realist landscape paintings MY WEBSITE MY BLOG: Paintbox & Easel GALLERY LINK...

Quiet Time 8" x 8" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Contemporary Abstract Painting Using a brush and palette knife to move the paint around, this small abstract is painted on a gallery wrap canvas.  I started with greys, blues, soft greens and a fleshy-orange color.  The palette knife helped me scrape the canvas several times.  The caribbean blue and rose pinks were added to give it some pop and interest.  The sides of the canvas are painted in the grey-blue background color, and signed on the side.  This painting is drying in the studio, and is for purchase.  Contact  Kay Wyne  for more information on this abstract painting.  Thanks for looking....Kay
