"Blue Valley"  ©2016 Niki Gulley SOLD •  24" x 12" textured oil painting Just sold  through my gallery, the Good Art Company in Fredericksburg, TX! I painted these Texas Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this vertical wildflower series, I've framed the paintings in espresso floater frames so that you can still see the textured oil paint continuing around the edges of the canvas. These Texas wildflowers look great hung alone or in a grouping, too! I did another large collage of the longhorn cow that I saw near Kerrville this summer. I had the other one 'Lunch Time' ready for a show and I sold it, so I did another view to replace it.  It will go to Breckenridge for the Best of the Best Show. This was very tedious and takes a while to do one like this.  It is 30x40 on stretched Canvas. I haven't decided on a name yet.

While in Canada last summer we stopped at Athabasca Falls.  The water is a lovely turquoise.  Wikipedia explains why the water is this color: A   Rock flour , or  glacial flour , consists of fine-grained,  silt -sized particles of rock, generated by mechanical grinding of bedrock by  glacial erosion  or by artificial grinding to a similar size. Because the material is very small, it becomes suspended in  meltwater  making the water appear cloudy, which is sometimes known as  glacial milk . When the sediments enter a river, they turn the river's colour grey, light brown, iridescent blue-green, or milky white. If the river flows into a  glacial lake , the lake may appear  turquoise  in colour as a result. When flows of the flour are extensive, a distinct layer of a different colour flows into the lake and begins to dissipate and settle as the flow extends from...

I just loved doing this one - I think I've found a new love.  But of course, I seem to find one every time I try something new.  I used a bright blue acrylic paint for the panel, then drew on it with oil paint. 12 x 12 oil on panel contact artist to purchase $200 unframed Pat@Meyer.net Last week in our weekly class the students had chosen to work on mixing better colors.  So I put on a color mixing boot camp.  Each student selected a zone of color and by comparing to the color wheel and their color charts we used art cast objects to do value study in those colors.  Using just those 4 zones of color this painting was created.
