New "October Transitions II" - Aspen Tree oil painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"October Transitions II" ©2017 Niki Gulley 36" x 36" oil on canvas I love painting aspen trees and I usually work with a more primary color palette, but in this painting, I wanted to convey a quieter, more peaceful mood. Opting for calming grey greens, soft golds and reds with hints of teal, Harmonic Hues reminds me of the serenity I feel while walking through the forest on a cool autumn day, being totally immersed in nature, not a care in the world. I hope you are transported, too! For more information on "October Transitions II", please contact my gallery,  the Good Art Company Gallery, in Fredericksburg,  goodartcompany.com/gac/ . E-mail  Niki Gulley  for more information on my birch and aspen tree oil paintings.  Or, visit  www.NikiGulley.com  to see more of my contemporary landscape paintings.

Demo Painting by artist Pat Meyer

Demo for class to purchase contact Pat@Meyer.net One of the most common mistakes that beginning painters make is to include too many hard edges.  Maybe this is because we are often taught as children to “fill in all the colors”.   If you paint in this manner you are not seeing the world as an artist.  Sharp edges are compelling when combined with a polarity of values. In other words if you place a sharp edge where the light is very light and the dark is very dark you will certainly create and electrifying visual event in the painting.  But sharp edges must be kept to a minimum and used only with a clear pictorial purpose in mind.  A painting should be like a symphony with a crescendo.  Start off your painting by writing down a clear vision of where the hard edge will be placed and usually this is where you want to draw the viewers most attention.  Other areas can be broken color, softer edges and th...

Jimmy Longacre_subjective realist landscape paintings_ ZEROING-IN

My last couple of posts have dealt with identifying and emphasizing one thing that you want to communicate in your painting.   Here's one example of what that can mean.  The reference photo that I used takes in a lot of beautiful subject matter, and a number of fun compositions could be derived from it.  I chose to "zero-in" on one aspect that particularly interested me, and you can see in my painting how I ended up cropping the subject and emphasizing the burst of light in the right-mid-ground. Then, I edited-out things that did not support my concept, and did all I could to emphasize my main point of interest. Often, in my workshops, I see students take on everything in a reference photo simply because that's what's in the photo!  This mental attitude is what I refer to as "thing- o-vision".  If we don't consciously shift into "art-o-vision" we automatically begin taking dictation from our reference, whether painting from lif...

First Place Award for "Following the Leader" by Niki Gulley

"Following the Leader" ©2017 Niki Gulley 24" x 12" textured oil painting on canvas I'm excited that this painting just won first place at the Artists of Texas H2O show held in Corpus Christi! Gold, white, tangerine – quicksilver Koi slice through silent waters. Playful, darting fish follow each other up through the composition, while cool colors float and ripple across the painting forming tranquil patterns.  A happy threesome glides by, lifting your spirits as you gaze into this vertical panorama while thick strokes of paint created with palette knife add dimension and movement. For more information on my textured contemporary landscape paintings, please e-mail  Niki Gulley. Or, check out my website at  nikigulley.com  to see more of my palette knife oil paintings.

Palette Knife Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

"Texas Pride II"  ©2017 Niki Gulley 20" x 30" textured oil painting on canvas  • SOLD I painted these Texas bluebonnets and with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. In this wildflower series, I've painted the scene around the edges of the canvas on 1 and 1/2" deep stretcher bars so that the painting can be hung without a frame for a contemporary look. Or, I also have a beautiful espresso floater frame where you can still see the painted edges of the canvas if you prefer framed artwork. The original oil painting of "Texas Pride II" is sold, but canvas prints are available. Please e-mail  Niki@NikiGulley.com  for pricing and ordering information. Jimmy Longacre_subjective realist landscape paintings_ TELLING ONE STORY -- THE BIG PICTURE

It takes many of us a lot of painting experience to begin to realize that good painting needs a clear concept of what we're trying to do.  There are so many fundamental things about painting we need to understand and put into our work that it's easy to get lost and overwhelmed long the way.  With consistent effort we move from plateau to plateau, and without a burning desire to "get there" we  would surely give up.  Too many disappointments and failures.   The thing that has helped me the most to keep on keeping on is the realization that all our technical skills begin to come together as we use them to express one clear idea.  Excellent rendering ability alone won't do it.  Learning the rules of perspective won't do it.  Understanding how color works, and any number of other individual skills won't get us there.  Composition and design remain arcane mysteries wrapped up in too many "do's and don'ts" until we begin to see what it...
