I chose vibrant warm reds. oranges and golds contrasted against cool mountains in the distance and a calming aqua blue sky to highlight autumn's kaleidoscope of colors. Filled with layers of oil paint forming three-dimensional texture and utilizing unblended strokes, creates energy and movement throughout the canvas. Inner City Blues By Bruce Bingham 16 x 20  oil Here's something a little different for you.  My friend saw this and asked"when did Rick get a tattoo?" My response: "You're kidding right?  He would never get a tattoo with a flower in it." Meet Sammy: Sammy We have a fountain with a crack behind it.  Sammy the Snake lives there.  He is looking for a mate and his dating profile says his hobbies are rat hunting, slithering, and sleeping all day, in that order.  Every evening, when I’m relaxing watching the sun set, he appears.  Even though we keep different hours and have nothing in common, we can happily co-exist.  There’s a lesson in there somewhere.  Then he sticks his tongue out at me and moves on. "Autumn Serenade II" ©2017 by Niki Gulley 30" x 40" original textured oil painting Flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated. I'm excited that "Autumn Serenade II" has been juried into Milan Gallery's Discovery Show and received first place from the jurors! With that award, comes 6 months of representation at the gallery. "Soaring Dreams II" ©2017 Niki Gulley textured oil painting on canvas • 34" x 34" In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops and heavens above. Choosing uplifting golds and reds contrasted against a lavender-blue sky with gentle clouds drifting by, I've arranged the aspens in a circular pattern to give you a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest. Using diagonal leading lines with the tree trunks and limbs, your eye gazes into the focal point where all of the elements come together. Meanwhile, utilizing thick, curving paint strokes adds to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery. A loose and spontaneous watercolor, this one was great fun to paint. I did not pre-draw anything. I just found shapes onto which to build my flowers after a loose throw of paint. I am always telling my students to leave the whites of the paper showing through, and to be aware of the shapes they make as well, no two white shapes should be the same size and importance. If the design is a good one, the painting should be successfully turned in most directions and still look okay.
