I surprised myself when I used these colors to create this painting. I chose more neutral ones to be a backdrop for the sparks of random color peaking through instead of bold color throughout. I wanted to express how I felt when I viewed the remains of an area near my home that had survived a storm and saw new growth. In the middle of the death and sadness of the event I saw new life overcoming adversity and it was a reminder that yes we can go through the storm and there will be new life and a new beginning on the other side. "Rooted Together" ©2019 Niki Gulley 24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame Rooted Together was inspired from a trip we took to Monet’s Gardens outside of Paris. Being a lover of impressionist paintings, I was awestruck standing in the footsteps of one of my favorite painters! The gardens have been maintained immacuately and I could see exactly where he painted his paintings. I’ve always loved purple irises and was particularly drawn to this view, with the irises large in the foreground and all of the colorful blooms leading up to his house behind them. Painted with thick oil paint and palette knife, this canvas is loaded with texture, surprising pops of color and energy. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exagerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. Created with palette knife and oil paint, “Bundle of Sunshine” practically leaps off the canvas and comes to life with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint. "Flowing into Spring" ©2019 Niki Gulley 24" x 12" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas, framed in an espresso floater frame I painted this scene from the Dallas Arboretum on location a few weeks ago when the weather was beautiful and the spring buds were in full bloom. I love tulips being one of the first flowers to announce that winter has officially ended, so I focused on these colorful red and white striped ones in the foreground, which contrast so well against the complimentary green leaves and grasses. I also liked how their height leads you back into the distant flower beds and onto the Degolyer house in the background, so I chose this vertical panorama format to accentuate that feeling. Loaded with thick oil paint, texture and movement, I hope you can feel the joy that spring is in the air! Ruby Lilies 20x16 oil on canvas These ruby lilies really warmed my heart and made me want to paint them. I set the flowers out in the bright sun to create deep shadows.. The shadow they cast was as alluring as the flowers. The vibrant pinks and fuchsia were so full of life set against the cool green leaves, that I wanted to capture not only that vivid spring color but also the elegant sycamore tree in the distance with its speckled white bark.  Contrasting the height of the vertical tree against the horizontal blooms, I chose this vertical panoramic canvas, and repeating shapes throughout creates a harmony to the overall scene. Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, coreopsis and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe. Sometimes after I've been painting several hours I step back and am surprised to see an image I didn't purposely paint. In addition to those surprises some paintings seem to paint themselves with little effort. This painting, "The Way Out Is Up" is one of those special paintings. When I stand and stare at it with my eyes fixed on it all of a sudden I feel transported to the middle of a forest. I can hear the birds singing and the breeze gently rustling the leaves as a sense of calm pours over me. I was very surprised at how effortlessly this painting came together with all it's subtle greens and the light from above filtering through. The story behind the title for this painting is this...I get lost very easily and so how do I find my way? I need to look up... In the forest if I was lost and if I had remembered any of my "cub scout mom lessons" I might have a compass with me but otherwise maybe I would look up and search for the sun to get an ide...
