I've been reflecting a bit more lately as I realize I have lived through several "life stages" and am grateful to still be here and enjoying life. I think many of us feel we can't accomplish our daily "to-do list" and we are overwhelmed but maybe rest should be a focus. I look at this painting with its textures and colors swirling and hope that I was successful in having the lighter area be the focus. I wanted to show that in the midst of activity we can rest in the strength of the Light and not be concerned with controlling all we see.   Summer Courtyard 14x11 oil on canvas This was created at the Chandor Gardens in Weatherford. I met up with 10 other artist that came out to enjoy the peaceful setting. We were all set up within a safe distance..  We all focused on different subjects and came away with some nice paintings.  It was a joy to be outside creating art with fellow artist.   Description of Martini with Grapes // Barbarahavilandart.com Martini with Grapes is a still life put together and was painted with a knife. Lots of textures. Available

I love exaggerating the colors of the objects I paint but in this painting I tried to calm them down. I wanted to express the feeling of rest after going through a “storm”. The inspiration for this was an area in Houston that had been under water. As the water was receding and the clouds clearing the birds found food and in the stillness a beautiful glow of warm light blanketed the area. The light transformed the darkness and revealed the softened harmony of the landscape that was still standing after the crisis. The area was changed but I loved looking at the surviving trees and reflecting on how we weather storms and gather strength as the Light covers us and leads us through.                                                                    Thistle Way 20x16 oil on gallery wrapped canvas This was created in the studio from a couple of painting sessions on the river. The walk back to the car provided little pops of color with the wild thistles gracing the landscape.                                                                    Waterfall Garden 14x11 oil on canvas I painted this at Chandor Gardens in Weatherford, Texas. This is a beautiful garden area now owned by the city. The original owner, Douglas Chandor created the gardens over 70 years ago. He was a renowned portrait artist, but his true love was the garden. Hard to believe but the inspiration for this painting was a view of an area that was dry, with dead leaves and very few patches of green. I decided to paint this as I imagined it could be, filled with color and exaggerated brushstrokes on a vibrant red background. Yes, now this tells the story of what it could be or even what the area’s true identity really is.... Sometimes what our eyes perceive is not the whole truth, maybe there is more? Enjoy your day and practice looking a bit longer at your surroundings and maybe more will be revealed !                                                                    Garden Sanctuary                                                                       8x10 oil on canvas I painted this at Chandor Gardens in Weatherford, Texas. I met up with a group of die hard plein air painters.  The Texas heat can be oppressive, but it wasn't in the gardens.  I painted in the shade and there was a nice breeze to keep us cool.  I am so grateful to have so many beautiful places to escape to.   We can be so busy moving ahead and yearning to reach goals we think need to be met that we forget what is important. My grandfather said to me once, "you don't have to make all the mistakes, lean on the wisdom of others, learn from their mistakes!" I was inspired to create a scene that felt progressive and moving forward, but at the same time revealing a glimpse of a bit of the past, an old building, a previous home or safe place.
