"Autumn Awakening"  • 16" x 20" textured oil painting  SOLD •  ©2021 Niki Gulley Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery!  As we were nearing the end of our New England adventure, the temperature dropped 30 degrees overnight and we woke up to 20 degrees and frost the next morning. Luckily the view out our window was beautiful and I could continue to paint the magnificent fall foliage from the comfort of indoors that morning! The lighting coming through the clouds was so dramatic, causing the leaves to glow. The soft breeze that was blowing caused the foliage to sway and dance to its own rhythm and I wanted to capture that movement and energy in “Autumn Awakening.” I liked how the distant mountain was a deep shade of purple since the sun wasn't on it, and how it set off the contrasting complimentary colors in the foreground. Each stroke defined by thick textured paint and rich colors contrasted against subtle ivories, strike a reverberating chord and create a visual vibration that resonates in an optical song. Choosing to come in tight on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and dimension. It was such a joy to be there surrounded by these amazing fall colors, that it would bring me to tears every day. I felt so fortunate to be able to do this when so many people weren't able to travel, that I poured my heart and soul into every painting.   “Spring's Tapestry" ©2020 Niki Gulley SOLD • 24" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas Just Sold through the Good Art Company!  In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful day in April when the bluebonnets and wildflowers are painting the horizon in gorgeous shades of blue, reds and golds.  Driving through the Hill Country late one day, the sun was just starting to drop, casting this golden hue across all of the wildflowers it hit causing them to glow and dance in the warm light. Deep, long  shadows added to the drama and magic of the moment. Focusing on the patterns of color and contrast of lights and darks, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty. Set beneath a glowing sky on a beautiful summer evening with the sunflowers in full bloom, you can just make out the stone farmhouse in the distance against a backdrop of purple mountains surrounding the plain. Creating almost a patchwork with the sunflowers and their leaves, unexpected pops of red and purple peek out creating a rhythm and energy to the foreground.
