This painting has a new home in Illinois....this image is a little different from many of my paintings....I toned the color down. It is peaceful. Not alot of movement. I wanted the viewer to imagine that he or she is out on the Texas landscape...far from the city or the hussle and bussle of anyone. The grazing sheep are images that don't have alot of detail because they are small compared to the vast landscape. The canvas has big, open sky on the painting, so I am sure that some people could imagine this being in Montana or somewhere out west. (At least west of Dallas.) My inspiration for this painting was an old photograph out of an album....I really don't know where the pic was taken, and I added the sheep for interest. I have painted three paintings with sheep, and hope to do more. Thanks for viewing this blog, and I will be painting at the studio today and hope to post the rooster that I started yesterday. The Bridge Oil on 18" x 18" Gallery Wrap Canvas This painting was inspired by a photograph my husband took as we were sitting in traffic ready to cross the the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. It was a clear, windy day and we had a great time traveling around the California coast! I had researched the color of the bridge...according to my findings, the bridge is painted with a Sherwin Williams color #6328, Fireweed. I went to a local Sherwin Williams to check out this Fireweed color....and I really don't think the bridge is actually Fireweed. According to the paint swatches, Fireweed is a deep, rusty brick red....almost brown. So I mixed my own colors to what I remember and according to our photographs. This painting has a new home in Plano, Texas...it was a Christmas gift to a friend who traveled with us to California. This small 6"x4" oil painting traveled all the way to Europe and back.  I sent it as an exchange to an artist in Europe and the address was wrong. She emailed and said she did not receive so I painted another one for her. She got the new painting and about 3 weeks later this one came back. "Honor Guards", is a Medium size painting, 18"x 24", oil on canvas, unframed. Although reworked recently, this medium size painting was created in July, out on location. It was a foggy afternoon/evening. The light source was muted and unchanging. I was able to work for much more than my 2 hour limit without fear of losing my initial vision due to shadows moving. I have always loved to paint tall daylilies and these were as tall as me. There are many historic German stone houses back in these settlements and I often wonder if any of my father's ancestors are among the original Becker family residents. The white Texas stone can be seen in the old buildings and banks downtown as well as in these old farmhouses. I love Fredericksburg at Christmas, and we always bring the pugs when we visit there to deliver art to The Good Art Company Gallery on Main Street .

"Winter's Calm" ©2009 Niki Gulley pastel 16" x 20" This pastel was inspired by one of our few snowfalls in Dallas a few years ago. I bundled up and ran out with my camera in the morning to capture the moment before the sun melted all of the snow later that day. Having grown up in Chicago, I love the beauty and peacefulness from the first snowfall of the year.
