Crown of Courage- a lion painting by wildlife artist, Sandra Reeves Cutrer. A big boy, painted on a big (24" x 30" x 1.5") gallery wrapped canvas -all sides painted.
According to several research sites, the lion’s mane has often been thought of as extra protection from the neck being attacked by other males, although it seems lions mostly attack each other on the back and hips. Most studies lean toward the size and coloration of the mane serves as a signal to other lions about the male’s fitness, similar to the showiness of the peacock’s tail. And, it seems the females prefer males with darker, thick manes, as they project a bigger and healthier male to mate with.
