I am very interested in the Dutch style of painting and have been studying the art of this period. Rembrandt created his distinctive paintings with a small palette of colors dominated by dark earth tones and golden highlights.

The effective use of a limited palette, and the rich, dark, transparent backgrounds all set off the subjects of his paintings in a way never seen before and often imitated afterwards. It has been said that a painter has to choose between putting the emphasis on brilliant colour or on the use of light and shade.

My attempt with this painting was to use rich earth tones and very limited use of color. Hopefully
the viewer is drawn to the warm shadows and cool lights on the cutwork cloth and the antique
aged colors of the cookbook and scale.
