When an artist enters a competition they are putting themselves out there with a hope that they get in. It is always hard to know what the judges will be looking for and then you ask yourself am I good enough? Will they like my art? Etc. Etc. It comes down to Just Do It! "Texas Treasures"  ©2017 Niki Gulley 7" x 5" textured oil painting I painted these bluebonnets and Texas wildflowers with extremely thick oil paint and palette knives to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image comes to life and is loaded with color and energy. Yep, I know, try saying that title fast three times.. Ha! I just thought it fit this image though, so what the heck. The pond was in Le Vieux Couvent in France,  and was magical. Filled with frogs all singing and trying to find LOVE. I did embellish this with some of the foliage, the monstera was not there, but  I had a nice photo from which to bounce and decided to place it in for an accent element. This image is a pastel on a mystery sanded paper I had. Silent water is ruffled by a gentle breeze. Arching over, bending into the quiet waters, a tree is mirrored encompassing, embracing –this painting captures the dreamy reflections and tranquil landscape of one of my favorite spots to paint near my home.   I just finished this one today. After painting so many small journal entries, I guess I needed to 'break loose' and do a large watercolor. This scene was a constant view on my morning walks in France. Such a pretty and scenic area to paint. Chiquita  12 x 16 oil by Bruce Bingham What have you been up to?  I've missed you all. I'm back in action, or I should probably say almost up to speed. I am painting again and that makes me happy.  This has been a great time to be in the studio and revisit some of my reference material from my Cuba trip of things I've wanted to paint.  When I went to the Plein Air Convention in San Diego  I got a pinched nerve in my spine that put me flat on my back.  Literally I could not get up!  Long story short and to save you from much whining and unnecessary details, the hospital got me up and walking again and I was able to get back home. Special thanks to my pal  Ellen Willis  for getting me to the ER and making sure I was in good hands. Robi and I were both greatly relived I could make the plane ride home. I was seriously worried about that. He has barely left my side while I've been convalescing. If ...

"Spring Hues" ©2017 Niki Gulley SOLD  • 12" x 12" oil on canvas Just Sold!  I painted these spring aspen trees with palette knife and extremely thick paint. I love how the chunky paint adds to the texture of the bark and the movement in the foliage and branches. The painting continues around the edges of the wrap around canvas for a sculptural-like frameless piece of art. These aspens and birches look great hung alone to brighten up a little spot, or in a grouping with some of my other 12x12 trees. Hang them horizontally, vertically, on a diagonal or stacked. I guess I felt a need for a completely different genre, so here goes nothing. This is a scene from my walks on Sugar Beach Maui. It's a long beach and great to stretch my legs. I just love to watch the waves, and the way the light plays on the top of the crests. A seascape needs to be studied at length before painting it, after all, it's never still for us, and photos simply don't do it justice. They flatten the light and dull down the colors. Having said that, this is a composite from my photos, and a lot is from memory, an impression, that's what I was aiming for. Lying on the ground, not a care in the world, you gaze in wonderment as the clouds drift by overhead. To accentuate that feeling, I chose this tall vertical canvas, giving you a sense of scale and perspective. Working with warm yellows, reds and greens and utilizing thick chunky sweeping strokes add to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place. Affaire d'Art Gallery  Super honored to have been notified that I was awarded third place in the #galveston juried competition currently on display at the Affaire d'Art Gallery in historic downtown Galveston. My painting "White Oleander" was the chosen award winner of the three accepted. It's a wonderful showing of island themed pieces reflecting all the Galveston has to offer. Make plans to visit! “A Spot in the Woods” ©2017 Niki Gulley SOLD  • 12" x 9" textured oil painting Just Sold!  This summer we visited Colorado to escape our Texas heat and soak in the natural beauty of the mountains. We stayed at this peaceful, tucked away b and b surrounded by a massive aspen grove. I wanted to capture the texture of the trees’ knotted bark and also the peaceful feeling of being immersed in nature. Arching the trunks around the focal point, creates a feeling of protection and also helps frame the subject. Their old red barn sets in the distance, creating contrast against the cool greens and greys surrounding it and addintg an exciting pop of color.
