INVEST IN YOUR JUDGEMENTS

A study exercise in better discrimination.  Reviewing old paintings that were hopefully examples  "failing forward" :),  I will make a list of everything I can think of that might improve the first version.  When past work has sat in the "oh well" pile for a long enough period of time, bringing it out for close evaluation can be surprising.  What makes it work best for me is doing the study again with a punch list of the things I want to work on.  Like: composition, eye-path, light/dark pattern, focus, color, values…  You get the idea.  Don't just do the mental exercise, invest in your judgements, and paint with a purpose.

The Old Mill Study, Barbara Haviland

#mill,#water,#building,#11x14,#BarbaraHavilandFineArt.com This painting was part of a study.  We had the photo and I painted it then watched the demo. I always do that.  I like to change my painting up a bit. It is painted on a hardboard panel that has canvas adhered to it.  I have used this method for years. I don't care for the spring of a stretched canvas.  Thanks for viewing my art ~~Barbara Available  GALLERY INFO Barbara Haviland Fine Art 1579 County Road 1010 Woodville, Texas 75979 409-332-0141 Website
