"Marching into Autumn II" ©2019 Niki Gulley 12" x 24" textured oil on canvas I loved this brilliant aspen forest with its bright white aspen trunks slicing through all of the vibrant red and yellow foliage, contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the trees created a sort of rhythm and I focused on the placement of the ivory sentinels and strokes in the leaves to add to that feeling of a driving beat. "Autumn Concerto II" ©2018 Niki Gulley 16" x 20" textured oil painting  I painted these colorful birch trees on location with the fall hues emerging in all of their glory. I loved this grove of trunks that twisted and turned, slicing bright white through the tangle of autumn leaves. Painted over several mornings, the air was crisp but the sun made for beautiful painting conditions that illuminated the subject and warmed the air. "Aspiring Dreams"  ©2019 Niki Gulley SOLD •  20" x 16" textured oil painting Just sold!  Painted on location, I was drawn to the striking reds and oranges of the maple treetops contrasted against the vivid turquoise blue sky. There was so much energy in the colors and the breeze blowing through the leaves, that I had to capture that feeling. Dappled light rakes across the tree trunks and illuminates flickering leaves as they catch the sunlight. Seems I've been reflecting a bit more lately as I realize I have lived through several "life stages" and am grateful to still be here and enjoying life. I think many of us feel we can't accomplish our daily "to-do list" and we are overwhelmed but maybe rest should be a focus. I look at this painting with its textures and colors swirling and hope that I was successful in having the lighter area be the focus. I wanted to show that in the midst of activity we can rest in the strength of the Light and not be concerned with controlling all we see. "Cascading Roses" ©2019 Niki Gulley  SOLD  • 9" x 12" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley Day 6, Provence Art Trek:  Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop  with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams Just Sold!  On the last day of our Provence Art Trek, we decided to stay right at our b and b to paint since it was so beautiful. Meanwhile the photographers explored the nearby area and others just relaxed by the pool. Choosing what to paint was a challenge since the grounds are so picturesque. Myself and another painter set up our easels by this lovely courtyard, with this stately tree surrounded by cascading roses, while another chose to paint lavender lined walkway and another set up by the ancient Roman bridge on the back of the property. It was a gorgeous morning and everyone's paintings turned out great! That evening we gathered for a final critique and "show and tell" from the trip. The photographers presented their best images...

Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. Exagerating the tile-roofed house in the distance also adds to that cheerful, whimsical mood of feeling content and like you’ve found your home. “Purple Majesty" ©2019 Niki Gulley 20" x 30" textured oil painting The lavender fields in Provence are incredible – perfectly manicured rows and rows of an explosion of violet as far as the eye can see. Rippling purple columns draw your eye to the lone stone farmhouse in the distance. Meanwhile the sun starts setting through the clouds spanning across the sky in rhythmic waves, mirroring the lavender shapes below and creating a flowing harmony. Road trip! Although I am not at all interested in driving on the freeways here in Houston, I occasionally entertain the idea of leaving the city and exploring the country by driving, not flying. Open skies, winding roads through mountains, breathtaking fields of color all seem like the exact prescription needed for recharging and inspiration. I am guilty of sticking to a familiar routine but I want to push myself to explore... to trust the road ahead to lead to new adventures. Day 3 - Granada, Spain: Andalusia Art Trek "Morning Shadows in the Rose Garden" • 12" x 9" oil painting by Niki Gulley Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams On the third day of our Spain Art Trek, we visited the Alhambra palace, one of the world’s true architectural marvels and the seat of power from Moorish to Christian rule, dating back to the 14th century. This stunning fortress is the culmination of Moorish design and has some of the best maintained late-Medieval gardens. The Generalife grounds were so gorgeous, bursting with cascading roses and dramatically lit pathways that we set up our easels there to paint while the photographers and tourists toured more of the grounds. With all of our rain this year, I had a bumper crop and wanted to capture the joy I felt seeing them signaling that winter was finally over and spring had begun! Created with palette knife and thick paint, this piece is bursting with color and texture. Blurring out the background, you can focus on each individual flower. Creating a circular composition within the square format creates a harmony and flow, while unblended diagonal marks add to the energy and happiness of the moment. "Peaceful Pursuit," Tuscany ©2019 Niki Gulley SOLD  • 30" x 48” textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas Just Sold through the Good Art Company Gallery!  This painting is inspired from a trip to Tuscany we took a few years ago when my husband, who is a professional photographer, and I spent about a week scouring every inch of the countryside for the best poppy fields and views. I was particularly drawn to this peaceful scene, even if the poppies weren’t as prolific as in other fields. I loved the calming, sweeping shapes of the hills and the vibrant reds contrasting against the softer grasses and white wildflowers. The road beckons you back to the stone farmhouse in the distance, while dramatic voluminous clouds dance across the sky, mimicking the foreground shapes and creating a sense of harmony. “Visions of Wildflowers III" ©2019 Niki Gulley 36" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful April day when the bluebonnets are painting the horizon in blue. Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, coreopsis, Evening Primrose and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe.
