New "Floating Expressions" Series Aspen Tree Paintings by Niki Gulley

"Floating Expressions II" ©2019 Niki Gulley 24" x 24" textured mixed media painting on wrap around canvas, framed in a silver floater frame In this painting series, I wanted the focus to be on texture. Usually I paint with a lot of color, but I opted to use a limited palette on these pieces to really concentrate on the peeling bark of the aspen trees. Bordering on the edge of abstraction and the cusp of realism, Floating Expressions is loaded with layers and layers of paint, built up with thin glazes and then palette knife to create extreme dimension. Choosing to come in extremely close on the subject, I played around with various strokes and paint thicknesses to add depth and energy. At the end, I had to throw in a few of my signature strokes of color – a splash of gold, some touches of purple, and just a dab of fire-engine red for added excitement and unexpected color twists.  To see more of my contemporary landscape paintings, please visit  ni...

My Portrait Start

My Portrait Start Bethanne This is my lovely niece, Bethanne.  She was married last year and I asked her if I could do a portrait of her as a gift.  Because she lives in California, it took a while for us to get together but a couple of months ago, she came to visit my sister who now lives near me.  We did a photo shoot and I did a very short life study..and now I am finally getting started on her portrait.  I thought I might post my progress.  I have been studying portraiture more and this is part of my journey-to get more proficient at portraiture and perhaps explore better figurative paintings in the future.  I have some ideas that I want to pursue and so this year, while I'm taking this break from shows and the stress related to that, I hope to explore some of those ideas...so I'm just getting started in these respects... I'll be working more on the drawing tomorrow and until I get the drawing correct and then start with the shapes of co...

New Lupine Palette Knife Painting from Iceland by Niki Gulley

"Lupine Blooms" ©2019 Niki Gulley 5" x 7” textured oil painting On our way back to Reykavik at the end of our Iceland journey, I had one small canvas left when we came across this beautiful patch of lupine blooming in front of this dramatic mountain. I’d really wanted to see a massive field of the blue buds while we were there, but whenever we would find the plants, the flowers had already bloomed and didn’t have much color left. So Scott pulled over long enough for me to capture these beauties, a perfect way to end the trip. Created with palette knife and oil paint, this piece is filled with joy, color and texture. Contemporary Colorful Landscape Painting, Trees, Fine Art For Sale, “WHISPERS OF THE TRUTH” By Passionate Purposeful Painter Holly Hunter Berry

Hard to believe but the inspiration for this painting was a view of an area that was dry, with dead leaves and very few patches of green. I decided to paint this as I imagined it could be, filled with color and exaggerated brushstrokes on a vibrant red background. Yes, now this tells the story of what it could be or even what the area’s true identity really is.... Sometimes what our eyes perceive is not the whole truth, maybe there is more? Enjoy your day and practice looking a bit longer at your surroundings and maybe more will be revealed! 20"x16"x1.75" Acrylic on Canvas/Available Click HERE for more info. Some Days are just Wipers

Some Days Are Just Wipers I love what I do but sometimes things don't turn out..when I'm painting in oils, I can just wipe out the painting and start over...but today I discovered as I was practicing with Gouache that you can't do that...so the painting I started this afternoon went straight into the trash.   Peace Be Still, oil 9x12 If you've read one of my former posts, you know that I'm taking a year off from painting for shows.  I've discovered that when you do that, (paint for shows) you lose some of yourself.  Painting for shows is stressful and I feel like I've almost gone backwards a little in my skill set.  So, this is why I'm taking a break and tying to just concentrate on learning and practicing and figuring out where I need to be going from here.  The gouache medium is part of that learning experience...because I have been wanting to try something new.  I admire my daughter who is always stepping outside the box and teaching her...

New Waterfall Palette Knife Painting from Iceland by Niki Gulley

"Falling Water V" ©2019 Niki Gulley 9" x 12” textured oil painting Across from the unique Kirkjufell mountain is the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall. Mult-tiered water flows and cascades from one layer to the next into the pool below, creating a river that eventually flows out to sea. Since it was a rather grey evening, I decided to play with the colors to create a more uplifting, fantastical scene. Using juicy, thick, diagonal strokes creates energy and movement adding to the sense of rushing water. Created with palette knife and oil paint, this piece is loaded with color, texture and joy. "Falling Water VI" Palette Knife Painting of Iceland by Niki Gulley

"Falling Water VI" ©2019 Niki Gulley 20" x 10” textured oil painting Next up on our Iceland trek, was you guessed it – another waterfall! We had to fit in at least one more before heading back to the concrete jungle of Dallas. These falls were really special, cascading almost perfectly vertical from the tallest mountain around. From high above, the rushing water cuts through rock and lush grasses as it winds its way down from the heavens above to the rushing rapids below. To capture the water's enormous length and height, I chose a vertical composition. Working with energetic diagonal strokes and thick paint, I hope you can feel the rush of the rapids and the surge of energy being surrounded by nature. New Textured Waterfall Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Upper Falls" ©2019 Niki Gulley SOLD  • 7" x 5” textured oil painting Just Sold!  My husband and I both LOVE waterfalls, and we try to visit them whenever we can find them on our adventures. This beautiful cascade turned out to be right in my husband's backyard where he grew up. We were in New York visiting his hometown, and having grown up in a city, I couldn't believe this gorgeous spectacle was right outside his door! Not far from Niagara falls, this massive water flow crashed and glided along the intricate rock formations rushing into the river far below. The sound of water rushing was so energetic and peaceful at the same time, and I wanted to capture that invigorating feeling in my painting. Setting up my easel at its base, I set out to recreate the energy and flow of the cascades while showing some of the lush vegetation surrounding them. Creating strokes in diagonal sweeping shapes to enhance that feeling of movement and rhythm, I hope you, too, ca...

Chickens are Weird and Roosters are Bossy

Today was beautiful here in the top of the hill country and some artist friends from Dallas decided to head out to paint here with me.  I enjoy that because being an artist is such a solitary job...it can get lonely at times and it's easy to get discouraged when you are working alone so much.  It is very easy to get into a rut or to wonder if you are on the right track.  Are you in a solitary career?  Or maybe you work from home remotely.  If you do, there are some real advantages but also some major disadvantages...but that's another blog post for another day.  Today, I did not paint alone and it was a gorgeous day. These painters wanted to go over to First Earth Farms where the owner had pumpkins growing out in the field and attractive displays of the fruit of their labors out and about the various spots on the farm.  So this was what I decided to paint...and as I said, a beautiful day..there was only one drawback, actually two but the one that was m...

There They Stand, by Melissa A. Torres, 5x7 oil on linen

My mom and I spent a few days in Galveston back in September. We'd get up at 4:30 am then walk to get breakfast, and most importantly, a cup of coffee, before sitting on the beach to watch the Sunrise. I took this photo before the Sun came peeking out above the clouds. I think this was our last day there, and I just had to take a picture of this row of palms that we walked past every day.  I used both a brush and palette knife for this painting. New "Rural View IV" Palette Knife Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Rural View IV" ©2019 Niki Gulley  9" x 12” textured oil painting Continuing our journey along the west coast of Iceland, I was taken by their simplistic architecture, often topped with bright red roofs to add a pop of color to the natural landscape. In the next several paintings, you’ll see I chose a different house or barn each day and set out to capture its shape, the colors and light hitting the structure, and the picturesque, idyllic, quiet scenery surrounding the building in all directions. Here is my last one, where we got up to capture sunrise. The setting had such a beautiful glow to it that I wanted to recreate that warmth in the foreground and sky contrasted against the cool distant mountains. Created with palette knife and oil paint, this piece is full of surprising pops of color, texture, energy and joy. Colorful Contemporary Landscape, “Shelter in Plain Sight” by Passionate Purposeful Painter Holly Hunter Berry

Do you see the building? Some miss it and just see the trees or they see it but don't think much about it. Shelter comes in many forms and when you need it the search begins. It is easy to miss that the shelter you need is right in front of you. We look high and low but the truth is what I'm trying to show in this painting and so I titled it "Shelter In Plain Sight". Isn't it a comfort to know that? It's not an easy concept but I have learned that it is indeed true. Next time you find yourself in need try looking right where you are and realize you are protected and sheltered from the storm by the Son! 24"x24"x2" Mixed Media on Canvas/Available Click HERE for purchase info. Today

I got up this morning and headed out...as soon as the dog and cat were fed of course...first thing that happened is I stopped at Valero for a water bottle and went back to my car...turned the key and click.click.click...nothing...UGH.  Well a guardian angel tapped on my window and said hey your battery's dead.  Duh...well he was kind enough to get it going for me.  I've needed a new battery for a while and so that's on the list for next week.  Even so, I did two little Gouaches, again from the safety of my car, sitting in the front seat with my little pochade box leaning on the steering wheel (after making sure everything in the car was off).  It was a great day, warmed up a bit but still was fun.  The couple below were watching their son play football  and you could tell they were really getting into the game...as I happened across the Morgan Mill school having their Saturday morning football game... The house (#2 painting for the day) was abandone...
