There is just something about being in nature, surrounded by the amazing autumn colors to get the creative juices flowing.   "Ready for Harvest" ©2019 Niki Gulley SOLD • 16" x 12" textured oil painting Just Sold through Seaside Gallery!  We visited Tuscany at the end of summer and were surrounded by grapevines everywhere we went, with the gorgeous, plump purple grapes ready to harvest at any moment. I loved the vibrant vines in the foreground framing the rolling hills dotted with more grapevines, olive trees, and plowed grain fields in the distance. Setting up my easel across from this vineyard, I created this textured oil painting with palette knife and a lot of paint. I arranged the planted vines to lead your eye back to the Tuscan villa and then to the hill town perched above the valley. Morning light cast deep purple shadows on the ground and caused the leaves and soil to glow. As a treat when I finished, we enjoyed a picnic of salami, proscuitto, pecorino and of course, vino. Yum!   "Autumn Awakening"  • 16" x 20" textured oil painting   ©2020 Niki Gulley As we were nearing the end of our New England adventure, the temperature dropped 30 degrees overnight and we woke up to 20 degrees and frost the next morning. Luckily the view out our window was beautiful and I could continue to paint the magnificent fall foliage from the comfort of indoors that morning! The lighting coming through the clouds was so dramatic, causing the leaves to glow. The soft breeze that was blowing caused the foliage to sway and dance to its own rhythm and I wanted to capture that movement and energy in “Autumn Awakening.” I liked how the distant mountain was a deep shade of purple since the sun wasn't on it, and how it set off the contrasting complimentary colors in the foreground. I love to take the scenic route to search for my next painting location.  I found this great spot on the back roads to Glen Rose.   "Woodland Adventure" ©2021 Niki Gulley 18" x 24"" textured oil painting on board I find being immersed in nature can have such an uplifting effect, and I wanted to share that feeling with you in Woodland Adventure. I chose pure, intense reds and yellows contrasted against autumn greens to create a fall forest that vibrates with color and energy.  I placed the vivid foliage in diagonal sweeping shapes to create a sense of movement, so that you can feel the wind gently rustling the leaves and causing them to dance on a beautiful fall day.   After walking along a trail for a while under the cover of heavy thick growth I came upon an open area that felt as if I had experienced a "Breakthrough" in my journey. The time walking in the shadows seemed long and so the moment I found an opening, a change in the Light, I was relieved to see I wasn't lost. Can you relate? I wonder, how many times in my life will I experience a breakthrough and will I respond with appreciation and gratitude? "Falling Water" ©2019 Niki Gulley SOLD • 16" x 12” textured oil painting Just Sold!  My husband and I both LOVE waterfalls, and we try to visit them whenever we can find them on our adventures. This beautiful cascade turned out to be right in my husband's backyard where he grew up. We were in New York visiting his hometown, and having grown up in a city, I couldn't believe this gorgeous spectacle was right outside his door! Not far from Niagara falls, this massive water flow crashed and glided along the intricate rock formations rushing into the river far below. The sound of water rushing was so energetic and peaceful at the same time, and I wanted to capture that invigorating feeling in my painting. Setting up my easel at its base, I set out to recreate the energy and flow of the cascades while showing some of the lush vegetation surrounding them. Meanwhile the photographers and tourists, visited the nearby towns to photograph covered bridges, wooden barns and the gorgeous fall foliage. I decided to paint this regal birch tree next to our inn. I liked how it was perched on top if this hill, extending towards the sky. The vibrant yellows and orange leaves vibrated with energy against the clear blue sky, and I wanted to capture that feeling on my canvas. What a great way to spend the day! Fresh View 20x16 oil on canvas  We took a country drive recently and passed by this bright red house. It has a garden of roses at the front gate. I had a vision of of bright and happy hollyhocks instead. I took out my artist license and it seemed to paint itself.  Here's to warmer days and fresh views.   

  We are told we only get one chance at a first impression. Well, I was passing by this patch of trees and vegetation when I took a second look. I had to "Look Again" just because I didn't feel I gave the plants a fair chance to impress me with their beauty, their story. We all have a story and at first glance it might not seem attractive but look a second time and you might find a more colorful and delightful way to experience the view. This painting is my attempt to suggest that and I of course used a bit more color than is usually seen so maybe you will take a second look at the painting!
