Driving through the hill country in springtime, there is such an amazing explosion of color from the bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, coreopsis, Evening Primrose and the plethora of wildflowers, that it fills your heart with joy and awe. Focusing on the rows of varied hues, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this beauty.     "Planted Sunshine III" ©2021 Niki Gulley 10" x 20" textured mixed media painting on canvas panel This sunflower field that I visited this summer was beautiful. Miles of bright, happy faces sharing their smiles with us and lifting our spirits. My heart literally swelled and I had to capture all of that golden joy on canvas. Just after sunrise, big, billowy clouds drift by on the horizon and are illuminated with color from the rising sun. The contrast of complimentary oranges and blues and yellows and purples created an energetic symphony for the eyes! Bright sunshine warmed up the day and caused the light to glow and dance. We patiently awaited as we watched them grow practically 6 inches every day, thinking any minute they would bloom. They were so fun to watch! Blossoms the size of dinner plates, chased the sun and smiled at us from the backyard. I had to go out over the course of several mornings and capture all of that happy beauty. I had never seen such a large cactus before and I was awestruck by its age and size. Purposely choosing this angle from below and narrowing the perspective as it stretches to the dramatic clouds drifting by in the sky, you can get a sense of its scale.   "Woodland Stroll" ©2022 Niki Gulley 10" x 20” textured oil painting Today we continued our counterclockwise adventure around Iceland to arrive in the north, near the massive, impressive Godafoss waterfall. Unfortunately, our weather turned for the worse, and it was way too wet to paint the falls. However, just over the mountain, 20 minutes away at our b and b, the skies were fairly clear with even occasional glimpses of sunshine. I loved these birch trees all over their property, leading you down to the gorgeous view of the mountains in the distance. Sprinkled with summer wildflowers, I set out to capture the light casting long shadows from the trunks and causing the grasses to glow in the foreground, leading to a feeling of joy and serenity in this beautiful spot.      "Autumn's Tapestry" ©2022 Niki Gulley textured oil painting on board • 20" x 20" In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops and heavens above. Choosing uplifting golds and reds contrasted against a turquoise-blue sky with gentle clouds drifting by, I've arranged the aspens in a circular pattern to give you a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest. Using diagonal leading lines with the tree trunks and limbs, your eye gazes into the focal point where all of the elements come together. There is the quiet energy of change coming and vibrant color charges the woods. Crisp fall mountain air, slender trunks cut bright strokes of white against a dazzling kaleidoscope of colors. Staccato strokes and shimmering hues add to the feeling of change in the air and suggest the breeze whistling through the foliage. I wanted this scene to be filled with movement and energy, so I incorporated a lot of diagonal and curving shapes in the design to suggest that feeling. Contrasting short staccato strokes against blended passages with my palette knives, also increase that sense of motion. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of walking through the woods on a beautiful fall day, letting your cares slip away and your spirit being invigorated.
