Taking A Break   © 5x7 inches   Oil George De Chiara Click here to bid.  Several years ago my wife and I took vacation to the Wichita Mountains (Oklahoma) for a few days. We spent our time hiking and sight seeing. I even managed to take a bunch of reference pictures along the way, which , believe it or not, I'm still working my way through. The reference for this painting came during a break we took along one of the many trails we hiked. For most of this trail, we were up on the valley walls looking down on the river, but about two-thirds of the way along the trail it descended to the river. When we got the water we were treated with a few nice large, flat rocks to rest on. That's when I noticed this little scene with the fallen tree and took a few pictures of it. www.georgedechiara.com

Clear Skies Sunflower was my afternoon class demonstration in Melbourne, Florida, making its debut in Flower Mound Studio today. This evening I finished work on a 48X24 Cherry Blossom Path based on the flowers of the Dallas Arboretum, and I posted the painting on my blog today. I'm looking forward to seeing all of these colors in bloom again next spring during the Dallas Blooms Festival, I'll be setting up for a plein air day and sure hope my painty pals will join me. 8" x 10" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley Day 5, Lake Como - Afternoon location: Bellagio   CINQUE TERRE / LAKE COMO ART TREK Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams After lunch, we rode the ferry to the famous town of Bellagio. Most folks chose to take the afternoon off from painting and shooting, and instead stroll the colorful town and do some shopping. Scott and I offered to take all the gear, and we snagged a bench to relax along the town's promenade. The location was beautiful with the pastel hued buildings set against the mountain backdrop and azure water in the foreground. Working with palette knife and thick paint, I quickly sketched in the scene before we caught the last ferry back to Varenna. We finished the day with another amazing meal and new found friends! Boathouse   © 5x7 inches  Oil George De Chiara Click here to bid. I painted this during a recent trip to Dallas. I was in town dropping off a few paintings for an upcoming show and stopped by White Rock Lake to do a little painting. The lake was very still and had a strong, glass-like reflection to it. Occasionally, a small breeze would blow by and give just the slightest disturbance to the water breaking up the reflections. I  loved the way this boathouse and dock reflected into the water and carried across the lake. www.georgedechiara.com

When we were in Mexico this summer, we found this great hamburger place called, Johnny Rockets. I loved the all white with the red stripes, red chairs and booths.  It was near closing time when Karla and I went in to get a hamburger and milk shake (Keri was sick in the room) and the people that worked there were discussing something and I caught their photo as we walked in. I considered putting something on the wall, but kept thinking I wanted it to be about them, not a clock or sign, etc. This is painted on Strathmore 90lb watercolor paper with 2-3 layers of gesso for the texture, using watercolor.  I love painting this way, because of the lines in the paper, and being able to save back whites. It is half sheet size, so it will be large when framed.

I think I will visit this area more often and get some different viewpoints and color contrasts. This are I think is near the Underground Surf Shop at the sea wall.

Painted during a steady light drizzle, in the Port Aransas Plein Air competition.  I't's interesting how the light coming through an overcast reverses the usual order of things from warm influence in the light with cool shadows, to warm shadows and cool influence in the light.  I've noticed that if I pay attention to this phenomenon, it will sometimes produce rather beautiful color relationships. We rode the ferry to Lenno, and then arrived in style by private water taxi at the beautiful, lush Villa Balbianello. Perched on a cliff overlooking the lake, the manor and tropical gardens are immaculately maintained and exquisite. While difficult to figure out how to capture that beauty on film or canvas, we were up for the challenge and loved every minute of the idyllic setting.  If you'd like to join us in  Cinque Terre / Lake Como  for our next Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop Sept. 12th-21st , please let me know. Sunday Afternoon 12" x 12" Oil on Canvas Contemporary Palette Knife Painting I was playing around with the palette knife, putting layer after layer on the canvas.  I may need to put a few details on the flowers, but need to let it dry.  The paints were applied with the palette knife, so it will take a while to dry.  Thanks for looking at this blog....Kay

Fiesta is a yearly event that happens here in San Antonio in April. It's several days of parades, food, drink, partying, and festivals. I wanted this painting to be what I call "Fiesta-sy."
