I did a drawing each day in December.  There are a few missing because this was the format for the collage, plus there were a couple that i missed getting done.  It is hard sometimes to get one drawing a day.

"Old Soul" Winfrey Point, White Rock Lake©2017 Niki Gulley 12" x 16" oil painting During the Oil Painters of America convention held last spring, artists from around the country gathered one day at White Rock Lake to capture the beautiful surroundings. I was drawn to this magnificent, massive live oak tree at Winfrey Point. Setting up my easel close to its base so that I could see and capture all of its gnarly trunk, roots and limbs, I kept the background softer to help show off its structure. “Into the Woods" ©2016 Niki Gulley 9" x 12"" textured oil painting I painted "Into the Woods" on location when we visited New England last fall during the height of fall foliage. The kaleidoscope of autumn colors was ablaze, and I was attracted to the dappled light sneaking through small gaps in the forested canopy, illuminating the winding path. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with color, movement and energy! Angry Magpie NFS  16" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel This is one of my son's favorite paintings...so I gifted it to him for Christmas. I think that this magpie has spunk and character.  Mixing my cool and warm greys was experimental and a good lesson on values.   The brush strokes are loose and deliberate giving this magpie a painterly look.  I was thrilled that Blake was very fond of this painting, as I will be able to see it knowing where it lives.   Our Christmas was very special with our youngest grandson coming home from the hospital on Christmas Eve.  Peter Thomas Henry is our Christmas miracle! It's hard to get a photo of these busy little guys, as Oliver and Charlie are on the move most of the time.  I have had lots of family time lately, and very little studio time---I have a new series of paintings that I can't wait to work on!  Thanks for looking at this blog... "Aqua Rhythms" ©2016 Niki Gulley 9" x 12" textured oil painting I wanted this painting to be about the power of water to uplift your spirits. Painted on location, I hope you can feel the tides lapping on the shore and hear the rhythmic, soothing sounds of the waves cresting and falling. "Marching into Autumn" ©2016 Niki Gulley 10" x 20" textured oil on canvas I painted this colorful autumn scene near my home when the fall foliage was first starting to appear. I loved the vibrant reds, oranges and yellows of the cypress contrasted against the multitude of greens surrounding it. The patterns of the shadows underneath the trees created a sort of rhythm and I played up the angles of the trees and strokes to add to that feeling of a driving beat. I hope you, too, can feel the energy and joy of being surrounded by nature as autumn approaches. "View From Panther Junction" by David Forks 8"x10", Oil on panel I painted this from a photograph taken at Panther Junction in Big Bend National Park.  The actual photo was rather mundane, taken mid day the light was not very interesting and the entire image was rather gray. I took much liberty with the painting process, working quickly I splashed in some light and shadows and accentuated the desert color. 

"Morning Glow, White Rock Lake" ©2016 Niki Gulley oil on canvas • 20" x 16" On a peaceful spring morning, I set up my easel at White Rock Lake to capture the sun rising behind this beautiful, tangled Cottonwood tree. I liked how the warm light showed off the tree's curves and textured bark, and I chose this vertical composition to show off its size and strength. In the distance, the sun glistens along the water's surface and I hope this scene lifts your spirits for what the day has to bring. "Lone Star Escape"  ©2016 Niki Gulley 9" x 12" textured oil painting I painted these Texas bluebonnets at a plein air painting workshop I was leading in Fredericksburg, TX. I loved the pop of color on the flag flying off this cabin's back porch in contrast to the vibrant cobalt bluebonnets. Working with palette knife and thick oil paint, this Texas landscape is loaded with texture, color and movement!
