"Desert Oasis" ©2018 Niki Gulley 18" x 24" textured oil painting This summer my husband and I were asked to lecture for Southern Methodist University at the campus in Taos. We love the scenery in New Mexico so much that we decided to stay an extra week to paint and photograph. One day we drove towards Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keefe lived, stopping at this scenic overlook of the Rio Chama on the way. Loving the setting and the drama the light was creating on the distant rock formations, we decided to stay right there and capture its beauty.  Gentle S curves lead you down the river while shrubbery and mountain peaks create rhythmic patterns adding to the flow of the scene. "Warm Welcome," Santa Fe SOLD •  12" x 16" textured oil by Niki Gulley Just Sold!  During a recent trip to Santa Fe, we visited this peaceful little street off Canyon Road where each home is postcard perfect. Between the unique adobe architecture, the dramatic morning light, and the beautiful plantings surrounding each home, it was hard to choose what to paint! I was drawn to this cool old doorway built into the pueblo wall. I loved the oranges of the adobe contrasted against the purples in the various blooming sage plants. Hot Pink Cactus 14x18 oil on wood panel This was inspired from a trip to Big Bend. The array of colors in the desert were surprising. The deep colors are intensified after long periods of no rain. The sun came out again for us on the last day and we had that  unusual combo of fall color and snow. Triple Crown by Bruce Bingham 9x12 oil I took out my last 9x12 panel after the first painting, divided it in half and did some quick value studies of the same scene using different colors. I know this sounds odd because so many painters go out and work on color studies that match the scene, but all I think about is value and pushing colors to match  my own vision, mood, or sense of harmony. In fact I make an effort to not be influenced by local color, like a green tree for example. I'm more of an impressionist than a tonalist because it's what I enjoy the most. There is no right or wrong here. These each took about 20 minutes and it's a great way to  clean up your palette after a painting trip! Thanks for following along.

The thing about painting trips is that it stretches you as an artists. It forces you out of your comfort zone and to look at things with fresh eyes. It also made me choose a subject that I wouldn't normally paint. Canadian Vista View by Bruce Bingham 12 x 12 oil I usually go for structure over pure landscapes and definitely not vistas.  It's a personal preference but partially because  I feel like these views are so majestic I'm not sure I can convey that feeling. But this is where my friends landed so I gave it a whirl. I can really see why people get into painting mountains. Funny thing, below is my friend, Mary Burkhardt's painting next to mine. Even though the interpretations are very different it almost looks like the  same painting extended! Seeing Double Thanks for following along!

We drove to Banff one chilly morning and painted with a group at Vermilion Lake. A beautiful place with foggy moody weather, and a variety of ducks and geese. Incoming by Bruce Bingham 12 x 12 oil Afterwards we were feeling tired and hungry so went to the Fairmont Hotel in Banff and had a wonderful late lunch in the Rundle Room with a beautiful panoramic view of Mount Rundle. Did I mention we were feeling a little lazy and cold so decided to splurge and leave our car at the valet. We didn't think twice about it till we came out after an hour to pay and the attendant asked us for 40$. More than lunch!!!LOL  Yeah, I know.

"Road of Promises," Ghost Ranch, NM 16" x 20" textured oil by Niki Gulley This summer my husband and I were asked to lecture for Southern Methodist University at the campus in Taos. I understand why she moved there! The scenery and dramatic lighting are stunning.  That afternoon I decided to paint in another direction, attracted to the quickly moving fluffy clouds over the distant mountains and the lure of the road pulling me into the landscape. In the distance, the lake beckons as an oasis amongst the desert scenery. Working with palette knife, I set out to capture all of the different textures from the sandy foreground to the bushy sagebrush and from jagged rocks to gnarly shrubbery. Oil and Cold Wax on Paper 6 3/4" x 11"

The Canadian Plein Air Adventure Continues: We were always on the lookout for critters and good places to paint without too much snow and ice. Bears! OH MY! Mama and three baby grizzlies. We chose to head in opposite directions. Photo courtesy of Brian Smith. Canada has lots of trails to hike and we could just pull into a parking lot and find great views just off the road. Snuggled Against The Cold by Bruce Bingham 12 x 12  oil This was a fun one to paint with the group of trees snuggled together still wrapped in their blanket of fall color to keep warm as long as possible. And afterward we stumbled upon this striking view. Room To View by Bruce Bingham 9 x 12 oil Other critter sightings: Rocky Mountain Sheep Goats and a very fluffy coyote! I did see and elk but couldn't get a photo and I was really disappointed not to see a moose! Some people saw lots of them. Darn, guess I'll have to go back;)...

I understand why she moved there! The desert scenery is stunning. I set out to capture this beautiful mountain with its craggy rock formations with the aqua sage brush in the foreground. I loved the contrast of the orange cliffs against the cool grasses, bushes and sky and the deep purple shadows causing the shapes to pop. El Tesoro Falls 11x14 I created this from a couple of field studies and a photos from El Tesoro.  El Tesoro is a camp for kids in the Granbury Area. A lovely river runs through it with colorful views.  A group of plein air painters were granted access.  We hung out, painted and enjoyed the solitude of this camp. There was only one day in Canada that kept us house bound. We painted my friends husband reading his book by a cozy fire. Dippy Sold 24" x 24" Oil on Canvas-Framed This contemporary abstract has a new home in Dallas.  I am always glad to know where my paintings land, and this painting was purchased by a lovely Dallas couple for their new home.  Oils on canvas are my first love, but I am trying to branch out creatively.  Currently, I have experimented with oils on oil paper, and now I am working in ink and watercolor.  I hope to post some of the new works soon.  Thanks for looking at my blog.  Have an artful day!   Kay

11 x 14  5 x 7  contact artist to purchase Pat@Meyer.net If you have never purchased this type of cabbage rose you probably don't know how expensive they are per bloom.  This color is one of their move valued cabbage roses so that being the case you need to get your monies worth out of the model.  As we say at our house no one eats for free.  The first painting the 11 x 14 took about 8 hours to paint and the second painting the 5x 7 took about 4 hours to paint.  If you figure it up that is about the same amount of time per square inch of canvas.  Never really thought about it before. www.PatMeyer-artist.com Signature Member Artist of Texas, Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, NOAPS, Southwest Artist

Circle of Color Sky 11x14 oil on wood panel I get so excited when painting a cloudscape I paint the first layer very quickly. I like to build up texture and color one layer at a time. I decided to blend the hard edges of the palette knife work with small circles. This works well when painting on the hard wood service. Check out the texture on this one. It was fun. Out of all my travels I’ve never been to Canada!  So I was very excited to sign up for Fall Color Week put on by Plein Air Magazine.  We all met at Kananaskis Lodge to paint the fall color and ended up with a bonus- snow! The snow fall came early this year and the combo of color and snow was spectacular. This is my first ever plein air snow painting!!! Snow Fall by Bruce Bingham 9x12 oil It’s hard to describe how majestic and imposing the Canadian Rockies are! I’ll break this up into a few postings. Did I mention the wildlife? Artist's Tip:  For my fair weather friends, if you dress right it's quite comfortable. I took my Antarctica clothes, but just wore my regular hiking boots with foot warmers. It's all about the layers: a Merino wool shirt followed by a inner and outer fleece, an inner jacket followed by a down jacket.
