Sunlight rakes across the wooden porch while you gently rock, enjoying the sounds and the view. “Exploring the Woods" ©2018 Niki Gulley 12" x 18" textured oil painting I painted "Exploring the Woods" on a beautiful fall day at one of my favorite spots near our home. The brilliant gold and tangerine leaves were glowing from the sun backlighting them, and the gnarly tree trunks were forming an intricate web that I just had to capture. Painted with palette knife and thick oil paint, this landscape is filled with tons of texture, color, movement and energy!  I love to challenge myself with design.  This was 'test' painting in readiness for a workshop I did. I don't like to pre-draw images for the most part, and instead let my paints run and fold into each other making interesting designs into which I can 'fit' a subject ... I used Golden Liquid Acrylics with a small squirt bottle to start this one. If one leaves a lot of white and interesting negative shapes, they have a better chance of finding a subject and bring it into focus. I worked with WATERCOLORS to get the leaf shape, and of course, NEGATIVE PAINTING.                                               This is a 7" x 12.5" image (unframed)                                                             ...

“Bend Ahead” ©2018 Niki Gulley 24” x 18" textured oil painting Inspired by a trip to Colorado in the fall, trying to catch the beautiful autumn aspens leaves before they dropped, we just caught the last glimpse of color before an early snowfall hit. The combination of golden leaves set against the vivid blue sky, and the cool snow shadows contrasted against glowing light highlights as the sun cast its warming rays, was a symphony to the eye! Garden Gate 14x11 oil on canvas panel Sold This was inspired from  a plein air outing with my friend, Joyce and my sister Patti.  We met at Chandor Gardens in Weatherford, Texas.  The gardens offer a quiet sanctuary and was a wonderful place to spend the day painting.  It sold to a friend of mine. I just finished this one. It's of the river area near my home. I have done several plein air paintings of it. This one however, I painted in the studio today, from my photograph.  Green on green is beautiful in nature, but in a painting, it tends to be a bit much of the same thing for me.   I usually play with complimentary colors, such as the orange/red family and even some blue/mauve colors as small accents amongst the green. I hope you like this one. For me, it was very meditative to paint. "Long Shadows," Slovenia ©2018 Niki Gulley SOLD  • 9" x 12" oil painting Slovenia and Croatia Art Trek - Day 6 Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams On the last day of our Slovenia / Croatia Art Trek, my group of painters decided they'd like to paint at our b & b again. Today the sun was shining, creating beautiful light and shadows on the unique architecture and landscape. Several of us were drawn to these iron tables and potted geraniums that were so inviting. Meanwhile the photographers visited a nearby church perched on a hillside surrounded by misty valleys and mountain peaks. The rest of our group had free time exploring the lake and we gathered that afternoon for a Slovenian wine tasting and to show what we had created that week. That night we dined on one last delicious dinner, saying good-bye to half of our new friends and getting ready to fly onto Dubrovnik for the rest of our group who wanted to visit the famous southern Croatian city w...

Extravagant Ways Oil and Oil Stick on 40" x 40" Gallery Wrap Canvas Contemporary Abstract Floral I love painting on large square canvases.  This 40" x 40" canvas is drying in the studio, waiting to be varnished.  Actually this is a mixed media piece because I used charcoal, oils, and oil bars.  Using the willow charcoal stick, I scraped into the layered oil when it was wet.  I enjoyed experimenting with different color combos as I worked my way through the painting.  The asymmetrical design and irregular shapes gives the imagination a chance to go to work.  Contact  Kay  for more info on this original painting.  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!  KMW

Over The Top 40" x 30" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Contemporary Palette Knife Painting This painting started out on my easel as a horizontal abstract with shapes and colors representing a keyboard.  After working with oil sticks, palette knife and a rubber scraper, it was in a state of uncertainty.  Last week I decided to flip the canvas and paint something abstract with the canvas sitting vertically.  Once colors and shapes appeared, I saw a very colorful and textural floral still life.  It is "Over The Top"!  Contact  Kay  for more information on this contemporary painting.  Thanks for looking at this blog...KMW

Just finished this journal entry.. a few years ago I was at the banks of the Pedernales River not far from where I live here in Texas. It’s a great spot to paint. Lately we have had an enormous amount of rain and flooding, so this area is a good place to stay away from till the water subsides.  I used an old photo for this journal entry.  It’s in my Stillman and birn 8” x 10” Beta series journal. "Lake Bled," Slovenia ©2018 Niki Gulley SOLD  • 5" x 7" oil painting Slovenia and Croatia Art Trek - Day 4 Led by Niki Gulley and Scott Williams For our next adventure on our Slovenia and Croatia Art Trek, we crossed back over the border into Slovenia again to land at the Idyllic town of Bled. Set on a peaceful, picturesque lake, the town is almost like a fairytale come to life. Above you see my painting of the island with its church set out in the middle of the water with the misty mountains in the distance. That evening, we visited Bled Castle, perched above town with incredible views of the area spreading out below.
