An insectivore, it inhabits  deciduous  forests in eastern North America, the  Great Lakes , the  boreal forests of Canada , and parts of the  Pacific Coast . It is the largest extant woodpecker species in the United States.     I almost flipped, when we saw this one near our birdfeeder. He was so big.!

My Mother in law would get one every time she had visitors and I planted them all. WE had white, red and white and solid red and many other colors. The bed was full  and I should have dug them up when we moved.  I have some here but not enough. Soon, I will. The painting is in the routed out oval of the wood. It is one  piece of wood and the  wood has been stained. They look good   side by side.  The wood frame was made from Pecan wood after a tree fell from a Hurricane. Available here

I learned this from another artist friend.  I love how you paint with a knife and then cut across where you think it looks good.    Thick juicy paint and  knife work.
