    "Autumn Serenade"   ©2021 Niki Gulley 36" x 48" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas Shimmering colors of autumn: Aspen, Oak and the forest of trees quiver, their light graceful leaves tremble and quake, silver and gold, scarlet and tangerine, with each light breeze. There is the quiet energy of change coming and vibrant color charges the woods. Crisp fall mountain air, slender trunks cut bright strokes of white against a dazzling kaleidoscope of colors. Staccato strokes and shimmering hues add to the feeling of change in the air and suggest the breeze whistling through the foliage. Isla and Dusty 11x14 oil on linen panel I am been doing a series of portraits inspired by family members.   While heading out of town one day I was able to stop and take a few photos for future inspiration and these brightly colored trees just stood out demanding to be painted! Why are they irresistible? I’m guessing you might say that their bright, happy, yellowish color up against the dark trees behind them is dramatic. Another thought is that those yellow trees aren’t overpowering, they are just standing strong and stable in the light of the day. I’m drawn to them as they seem to illustrate a quiet, strong sense of purpose. They are different from the others but not in a negative way. They add to their community of trees! (I know, I’m sounding like I think they are people but I think nature can often imitate humans!) So, to sum up my intention for this painting, I wanted to illustrate that “different” can often be “good” and to enjoy our differences! Longing for a cool beach and the cathartic sounds of the ocean, I started with drippy, fluid paint and  then built up thick texture to bring the seaside waves to life. Slightly abstract, loose and free, I hope you can feel the healing qualities of the water, especially if we can't get there ourselves right now.  "Venetian Textures II" ©2021 Niki Gulley 16" x 12" textured oil on canvas panel  I started this piece during our Plein Air / Photography Art Trek Workshop that my husband, Scott Williams, and I lead in Venice, Italy. We had painted several other grand locations, but decided on day three to paint a more intimate vignette of the canals. Since the whole city is on water, I love how their "garage doors" are actually for their boats! In this painting, I wanted to focus on all of the wonderful architectural textures and age of the homes as seen in the peeling stucco, crumbling bricks and weathered wood. Luckily I had a steady stream of gondolas passing as I was painting so I could add one in to set the mood.   Oh my, how many times have we thought..."when I get through this then all will be ok"? You'd think after so many years I'd realize that being in transition is the norm. We are all experiencing transitions of one kind or another these days and some are even welcome! As I was looking at this cluster of trees/brush I was inspired to paint it and hoped to show it "In Transition Again". By observing nature, we can watch how the Creator reveals that when it appears all hope is gone new life and new beginnings appear! As the light glowed through the old, dry limbs there was fresh, green growth demanding to be seen! Once again another season of transitions and my faith restored! It's in the Shadow 14x11 oil on linen  I spied this house on my morning walk. Gently reaching across and cascading over the trellis and wrapping themselves around white washed columns, these magenta beauties formed the perfect welcoming entrance framing the intricate turquoise doorway. Bright, happy faces sharing their smiles with us and lifting our spirits.    "Planted Sunshine" ©2021 Niki Gulley 16" x 20" textured mixed media painting on canvas panel A fellow painter friend of mine and I arrived at this sunflower field very early in the morning to capture the sun as it was beginning to rise and illuminate the landscape with golden light. We set up next to the road so that we weren't infringing on the property. We had gotten about 45 minutes into our paintings and you know what happens with best laid plans! It turns out that the owner of the farm must not be a fan of painters because we were shooed away and threatened with fines if we didn't leave.   As a child growing up I lived in a city in Pennsylvania and I don’t remember ever seeing palm trees. I’m fascinated by them and as a kid I always thought of them representing fun, carefree times, moving gracefully in the summer breezes. As an adult living in Texas all these years (barely remember living anywhere else!) I don’t have to go far to see palms...palms are common in my area . No matter, they still hold a place in my heart saved for dreams and a desire to relax under the summer sun and breezes coming off the water. (Yes , I know what an imagination! Houston’s palms are located anywhere and often in concrete shopping centers!) As a result of my fascination with them I of course have to paint them! I absolutely love the options they have for so many colors! (Yes, there goes my imagination again! Lol!) With this painting I tried to stay closer to the green family but often you will see me adding violet, magenta, orange, etc.! I think we can all use a bit of imaginat...

                                                                        Water Lily Garden 30x24 oil on Canvas A visit to Clark Gardens in Weatherford, Texas inspired this painting. I painted on location and still have not finished with all the painting ideas from that trip.  It was a hot summer morning and the perfect place to set up my easel. I created a couple while there and use those as color studies. This was painted in the studio using brushes, palette knifes and layers and layers of colorful paint.  “Running Red III”  ©2021 Niki Gulley 30" x 48" Textured Mixed Media on Canvas In this new series, I wanted to create pieces that are full of joy, energy, texture and light. Working on oversized canvases and painting the blossoms larger than life add to that feeling of hope and exuberance. Choosing to leave the background airy and working with thick layers of white on white paint, ribbons of brightly colored blooms dance across the canvas with spontaneity and freedom. Subconsciously, I feel like these light-filled visions came to me in response to so much bad news and the COVID lockdown.
