Hood County Sunrise 18x24 oil on canvas I painted this as my demo at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas on Saturday.  It was a fun day meeting new people and visiting with everyone. This painting is available for purchase thru the gallery.  Join me for a Palette Knife Workshop At Dutch Art Gallery October 20, 2012  9:30-4:30  Contact Pam Massar at Dutch Art Gallery to register at 214-348-7350 In this workshop we will explore the use of a palette knife when developing a landscape painting. I will guide each student in developing his or her own unique interpretation of nature. The goal is to learn how to edit the scene and grasp the essentials. We will focus on how to simplify the painting process by building forms with value while observing how to use color to affect intensity and contrast. Emphasis will be on learning to organize light and dark patterns and to see the landscape less literally and more as an exciting arrangement of shape...

RED LILY by Carol Peterson

"Red Lily" by Carol Peterson ( carolpeterson@suddenlink.net ) 11" x 15" watercolor $250.00 I photographed this lily in Northern Minnesota.  I have never seen a lily with ruffled petals before but this red lily had ruffled edges.  I didn't like the underpainting in the background of this flower so I painted gouache over the background.  I like the contrast of the flat gouache against the flower's transparent watercolor.

Three of a Kind White Roses by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Three of a Kind White Roses by Nancy Medina 12X16 Oil on Panel SOLD Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Three of a Kind White Roses was one of the demo paintings I completed for my workshop in Tennessee last weekend. After arriving back in Texas, it was tough heading back to the desk job having just spent a wonderful three days making color happen with a room filled with excited, happy students. I never knew when I began teaching flower painting over a year ago how much I would enjoy it. It's like discovering a new life's passion at the age of 50! It just goes to show it is never too late to have hopes and dreams. Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops at all. Painting in Montepulciano with Niki Gulley

12x9 textured oil painting by Niki Gulley Day 2, Montepulciano - Tuscany Art Trek With a little more time before our afternoon winery tour, we decided to work on another painting. I chose this view of the tile rooftops below spreading out in front of the valley. I loved the puzzle piece feel of the buildings, zigzagging in all different directions, clinging to the steep drop below with the fields of crops also adding their criss crossing patterns to the jigsaw puzzle. Pink Poppies Purple Iris and the Thing for Which I Shall Be Famous by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Pink Poppies and Purple Iris 16X12 Oil on Panel Purchase Information Flower Painting Workshops Nancy Medina Web Site Pink Poppies and Purple Iris is the newest small work in the studio, finished at dusk amidst the pug snores and new fall television lineup for which I paid little heed. The big announcements this week (besides the homesickness for my Tennessee workshop ladies and dear puppydog friends there) include three or four new workshops for 2013 newly posted on the Web site , over seven great sales this week (the light at the end of the 9 to 5 desk job beckons!), and the thing for which I shall be most famous.  I posted a few studio photos on my Facebook page and one photo went absolutely viral. One of the great benefits of moving my studio recently is I got to rediscover all the things I stashed away for another day and forgot about, like this little plein air painting I did in the fall of 2010 of hay bales sitting out in the field. PERUVIAN WEAVER by Carol Peterson

"Peruvian Weaver" by Carol Peterson ( carolpeterson@suddenlink.net ) 20" x 15" watercolor $800.00   This woman was weaving in a store in Lima, Peru and was wearing traditional dress.  She looked up as I started to take photos and I caught this pensive expression.  I used my usual liquid acrylic underpainting but in this case it interfered with the look I was trying to obtain in the painting.  As a result I covered the background with a mixture of gouache in green and black.

Hollyhocks: "Black Tie"

30x22 watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper with Daniel Smith paints.  I grew several black hollyhocks outside my studio door but no blooms this year thanks to the drought.  In my photo the bloom is more dark blood red, but with this one I've gone to the dark side and have pushed color, exaggerating where necessary. Day 2, Tuscany Art Trek with Niki Gulley

12x9 oil painting by Niki Gulley Day 2, Montepulciano - Tuscany Art Trek We woke up the next morning to beautiful blue skies with gorgeous puffy white clouds. We set up our easels at this amazing overlook in Montepulciano, with the whole valley spreading out before us. With so much to choose from for our subject, we decided to focus in on the church below. Our light was constantly changing from the beautiful clouds above so we had to paint quickly, and consequently each of our reactions to the scene came out differently on our canvases. I loved the variety in each artist's work! Pat Lautner and Sheri Jones painting at the gorgeous Montepulciano overloook.
