"Winter Tranquility" Rex Miller

Greetings, My name is Rex Miller and this is my first blog on Artists of Texas. The painting I have selected is a pastel on pastel/sandpaper and it was a fun experience. It's been a while since I tried pastels and the sandpaper made the difference. This is a 9" x 12" painting from Ruidoso, New Mexico; my "home away from home" where I have been vacationing for over 50 years.

There's a Storm Coming! - cowboy oil painting by Debbie Grayson Lincoln

5 X 7 Oil on Canvas Board $115 Includes Shipping and Insurance in U.S. I KNOW there's a storm coming and it's still largely undefined - just a darkness on the horizon. It's almost palpable and everyone's talking about it. I know every generation feels scared and worried about the particulars of their decades on earth. My grandparents were born in the 1880's and 90's. They endured  the horror of World War I. Thirty-five MILLION people died in that one! My parents were Depression children, and they endured even MORE horrifying wars and the dark cloud of polio and other childhood diseases. Both of their families lost a child to a disease that is curable today. I cannot imagine the sadness of watching a child perish. Today's generations feel as if we are all standing on the edge of a precipice with wolves nipping at our heels. People we elected, who we THOUGHT were trustworthy and intelligent enough to look after our interests are all proving to be the exact opp...

Cottonwood Art Festival this weekend & Tuscany Workshop

"Morning Overlook," Montepulciano • 9" x 12" oil by Niki Gulley Day 2 - Morning Location - ART TREKS: Tuscany Plein Air Painting & Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley & Scott Williams On day 2 of our Tuscany workshop, we headed to the picturesque hill town of Montepulciano, know for the delicious red wines. We set up at this beautiful scenic overlook to paint the valley below. Narrowing down a subject to paint was challenging since the whole scene was amazing, but impossible to capture all of it on our small travel canvases. Several students settled on painting the Duomo below, with its unique architecture and aqua dome. I decided to sketch in some of the buildings on the left side of my composition and show the Duomo and the lush landscape on the right. With only two hours left of morning sunlight, we had to paint very quickly, but everyone did a great job. Bella - as a few onlookers commented to us in Italian! One of our my students with her finished ...

Tip the Sky Blue Iris by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Tip the Sky Blue Iris by Nancy Medina 11X14 Oil on Panel Purchase Information Nancy Medina Web Site Tip the Sky is my newest blue iris painting, and was a small study for a 30X24 painting this evening of the same subject. I've got irises all over the studio today, but I think I'll work on that large painting just a bit longer. I noticed all my blue irises in the big painting line right up like little soldiers across the canvas. It's funny how sometimes I don't spot these obvious errors until I see the image on the computer screen!

2 Red Sheds by Sheri Jones

2 Red Sheds by Sheri Jones 7x14 oil on canvas I have driven past these cluster of buildings on my way to paint with friends for years. We finally made them our destination and had a great time painting them. A lot of times it is hard to find somewhere to park when painting plein air. This is across the street from a great furniture store and they let us paint from their back parking lot. This is available for purchase. $125.00 Sheri@sheriart.net http://www.sheriart.net/ http://www.sheriart.blogspot.com/

Mark Nesmith, Original Oil Painting, "Sam Houston"

"Sam Houston" Mark Nesmith Oil on Canvas 10" x 8" 2011 Click here  to purchase this painting. I guess I have giant legends of Texas on the brain right now!  After painting Big Tex from the State Fair of Texas I sank my teeth into this daily oil painting of the huge statue of Sam Houston in Huntsville, Tx.  The sculpture was created by David Adickes and stands 67-ft tall (plus a 10-ft base) and is titled "A Tribute to Courage." It's billed as the world's tallest statue of an American hero (we always say everything's bigger in Texas!)  This was painted alla prima , or wet on wet, and shows the East Texas pine trees in the background against a brilliant blue sky.  Read more about the statue and my painting here. Thanks for making my art a part of your busy day!  Please visit Paint Daily Texas  or www.marknesmith.com .

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore / Munising, Michigan by Martie Rains

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore 11x14 oil on canvas www.martierains.com martierains@sbcglobal.net       Taking a cruise through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising, Michigan proved to be a the high point of our trip to Lake Superior. For two hours we were treated to amazing and colorful rock formations gleaming in the sunlight, some with cascading waterfalls. There were so many great shots, choosing one to paint was difficult. The piece is my favorite, but there will be others. You can purchase this painting by clicking here .

Fire in the Sky Blue Iris Painting by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Fire in the Sky Blue Iris by Nancy Medina 11X14 Oil on Panel Purchase Information Nancy Medina Web Site Fire in the Sky Blue Iris is the newest work in Flower Mound Studio, as I finish up new inventory lists for paintings heading to the Texas Hill Country this weekend. The pugs are tickled pink their Aunt Bitsy is staying with them this weekend, since she finds ways to spoil them rotten that defy the imagination. Watching movies, sleeping late, snacks in the kitchen, there is no end to the delights that await them once Aunty is in charge, according to Howie, who says he would like to trade his mom for Aunty. AnnieBee, of course, will be joining us for the trip, and leaving her brothers at home, out of the public eye where they belong. After all, she directs all gallery related activities. Annie doesn't actually select the paintings that will be packed and shipped, but she does occasionally roll her ball behind one of them (an occurrence that results in loud commands and insults if...

BACK DOOR FLOWERS BY PAT MEYER

9 X 12 ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS  QUICK STUDY NOT FOR SALE You know what they say that back door friends are the best friends.  These flowers sit in a pot by the back door so they are great friends to me each day.  Since I have been recovering from my hospital stay these flowers brighten my day.  My sweet hubby thought it would be a great idea if I would sit and paint.  Since I am not feeling that great this is just a quick study.  May you have great back door friends and may you find your easel friendly.

Tuscany Plein Air Painting Workshop with Niki Gulley

5" x 7" textured oil by Niki Gulley Day 1 - Afternoon Location - ART TREKS: Tuscany Plein Air Painting & Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley & Scott Williams After we finished our morning painting at the villa, and enjoyed a delicious lunch of proscuittos, pecorinos, fresh fruit and a little vino, we ventured out to our afternoon location. Just one of the unique aspects of the Tuscan landscape are the cypress that dot the horizon, so we picked this long curving road lined by cypress for our second subject. This was the only day that it looked like it might rain, but we lucked out and the drops stayed away. The overcast skies are actually quite nice for plein air work because it provides some shade while you're painting, and keeps the light more constant. So we set up our easels along this overlook, and quickly blocked in our basic shapes and colors. Next we worked on creating volume in the hillsides, and then added highlights and shadows to the bushes to give ...

Full Moon Iris Blooms and a Monarch Flies Home by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Full Moon Iris Blooms by Nancy Medina 14X14 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Nancy Medina Web Site Full Moon Iris Blooms is the newest painting in a studio that is very quiet. All the televisions are off, all the pugs are sound asleep, and AnnieBee has taken a 10 minute break from barking at the crickets. This week I shipped a painting to a lovely lady in Canada who commissioned a Monarch butterfly for her home. The butterfly symbolizes a beautiful memory for her of her husband who passed away recently . It is my prayer and wish that this little creature will bring comfort and good memories when it arrives safely home. Hopes, prayers, and friendship may seem insubstantial, but they have the power to sustain us.

Field Farm All by Sheri Jones

Field Farm All by Sheri Jones 11x14 oil on canvas This old tractor is parked in a field off Hwy 51 in Granbury. The field it was resting in was a painter's paradise, with old cars, trucks, donkeys, goats and cows. I took a few pictures while there and plan to paint a few more from here. The bright red tractor really was what caught my eye. This is available for purchase. $150.00 Sheri@sheriart.net http://www.sheriart.net/ http://www.sheriart.blogspot.com/

Gated Community - cowboy oil painting by Debbie Grayson Lincoln

5 X 7 Oil on canvas panel $115 Includes shipping and insurance in US I know that gated communities, home owner's associations and the like have their place in this world. I just hope I never have to live in one....although, the thought of someone else making decisions  for me, mowing my grass, caring for the trivialities of home ownership and just leaving me alone to paint at times sounds enticing..... If you've lived in the country as long as I have, you've probably seen every kind of gate there is - and I HATE this kind...the floppy wire ones; made of barbed wire and cedar posts. Often they are made without benefit of an "H frame" so they aren't very sturdy - and I almost ALWAYS scratch myself on the barbed wire unhooking them and then again when I re-close 'em. I took this photo at Tommy Houston's calf working LAST spring. The gate was more conventional, but the cowboy unhooking it was still having difficulties with it, so I gave him a gate that jus...

MARK NESMITH, Original Oil Painting, "Big Tex", State Fair of Texas (daily painting)

"Big Tex" Mark Nesmith Oil on Canvas 10" x 8" 2011 Click here  to purchase this painting. Today is the first day of Fall, and that means it’s State Fair time again in Texas. The annual State Fair of Texas is held at Dallas’ historic Fair Park and has been a favorite vacation spot and tourist attraction since it started in 1886.   The State Fair of Texas is the largest fair in the United States with 2,618,500 people attending in 2010.   Since his debut at the 1952 fair, Big Tex has welcomed all those visitors with his booming “Howdy, folks!”   He stands 52 feet tall, wears size 70 boots, a 75 gallon hat, a size 180/181 shirt, and sports a 284W/185L XXXXXL pair of Dickies jeans (I bet my wife is thinking “I’m glad I don’t have to wash his clothes!”)   Big Tex is actually made from papier mache and was originally a giant Santa Claus created to encourage holiday shopping in Kerens, Texas.   R.L. Thornton purchased the Santa in 1951 and had Dallas a...

Memory Garden Poppies and Irises by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Memory Garden Poppies and Irises by Nancy Medina 28X22 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Nancy Medina Web Site Memory Garden is a refreshed version of an earlier container garden that has been sitting in the studio for a few months. I perked up the poppy petals, freshened the daisies a bit, and deepened the yellow shadows on the sunflowers. This is a bright, fun version of reality. I wish I could make reality more fun every day, but for now, I'll just have to be content with doing it with paint!

"Evening Tide" by Kyle Wood

"Evening Tide" - 24" x 18" - Oil Here is my latest oil painting that I just finished yesterday. Since the beginning of summer, I have been working on a creating a new series of lighthouse/coastal themed paintings. This is the third one in the series that I have created. The lighthouses themselves are not specified. Instead, they are imagery places that could be anywhere in the world. For this painting, I chose to do a sunset and used lots of warm colors (yellow, reds, and oranges). For contract, I used the opposite complimentary colors of purple, green, and blue throughout the painting. The painting is also a vertical composition, which is more unusual than the horizontal format that I typically do. This composition worked out better vertically. Enjoy! To view more of my paintings or other blogs, please visit www.kwoodfineart.com . Also, this will by first year as one the participating artists in the Third Annual Artists of Texas Show at The Dutch Art Gallery, star...

Rodeo Plaza - Original Oil Painting by George De Chiara

Rodeo Plaza 9x12 inches Oil on Linen Panel by George De Chiara Click here to bid. Opening bid just one penny! This weekend I was invited to go paint at the Fort Worth Stockyards with a group of painters. We had beautiful weather to paint in on Saturday morning. After considering several interesting sites, I chose to paint this view of Fincher's Western Store because I was so drawn to the shadows against the white building and the clear blue sky. The view reminded me of something Edward Hopper ( Early Sunday Morning ) might paint and after spending the day painting it, I can better appreciate why he chose his subjects for a painting. For me, scenes like this are all about the abstract patterns, like the way the chimney on the roof creates a nice break in the big blue (sky) shape behind it. I am also attracted to the way the windows and shadows create interesting shapes in the big white space of the building's wall. These shapes are really what I was thinking abou...

MARK NESMITH, Original Oil Painting, "Evening at Cedar Creek Lake"

"Evening at Cedar Creek Lake" Mark Nesmith Oil on Canvas 12" x 12" 2011 Here's the second of my oil paintings of the water lillies at Cedar Creek Lake.  This is an oil painting on stretched canvas and is a smaller painting than the first (12" x 12").  It's taken from a calm and tranquil evening spent at Cedar Creek this past summer. The fallen logs in the top corner are what first grabbed my attention. I loved the way the lilly pads seemed to surround them, almost like they were laying seige. The logs are starting to be overcome by the weeds around them. It seems like nature always reclaims her own. ART TREKS: Tuscany with Niki Gulley & Scott Williams

8" x 10" oil by Niki Gulley Day 1 - ART TREKS: Tuscany Plein Air Painting & Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley & Scott Williams On the first day of our Tuscany workshop, we stayed right at our villa (pictured below) since the scenery there is so beautiful and painted right on site. While some of the group chose the countryside for their first subject, I had a couple of students who had never painted before and one professional artist, Barbara Mason, http://www.dragonflystudiocreations.com/index.cfm?pID=2724, who decided to paint the still life. Barbara often paints these gorgeous pears and cherries, so we set up a still life next to her against this textured old stone wall. When someone has never painted before, I like to start them on a single subject like this, rather than have them try to narrow down what to paint from the entire landscape. So first, we sketched out our composition, and then applied a thin layer of oil paint to block in the basic shapes and c...

Daisy Jungle Dance by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Daisy Jungle Dance by Nancy Medina 14X14 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas Purchase Information Nancy Medina Web Site Daisy Jungle Dance is drying amidst quite a bit of activity in the studio today. This morning I packed up paintings to ship to Maryland, California, North Texas, and Ontario Canada. Then I framed and tagged a few dozen paintings for the trip to The Good Art Company Gallery this week. All this moving and grooving really exhausted the pugs, who have a habit of following me from room to room. It's nice having my own little entourage, though I have to tiptoe around constantly to watch out for little toes. I still have about a jillion things to do before the gallery trip, but we did set aside six trips to the back yard today for the most important task of all: tossing a new Martha Stewart toy for AnnieBee. When the boss is happy, everypuggy is happy.

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse / Michigan by Martie Rains

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse 11x14 oil on canvas www.martierains.com martierains@sbcglobal.net Lighthouses, scattered around Lake Superior, have warned ships of of danger for years. Treacherous rocks have been responsible for many a shipwreck. Most of the lighthouses we visited had been built in the 1800's and were still operating today. Eagle Harbor Lighthouse, Michigan, on the Keweenaw Peninsula, was originally built in 1851 then replace by another structure in 1871. This picturesque building overlooking the lake was a great subject to paint. You may purchase this painting by clicking here .

Pink Poppy Part Deux by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

Pink Poppy Part Deux by Nancy Medina 6X8 Oil on Linen Board Purchase Information Nancy Medina Web Site Pink Poppy is a new work in a happy studio today. This morning I chauffered AnnieBee to her favorite country retreat, her grandma's farm in East Texas. She enjoyed two dinners, hers and her skinny cousin Abby's (ignoring the yipping objections from Abby), then ran right up the stairs and scarfed down one more snack that was laying about unattended in Abby's bedroom. We are both wearing pink today to support pug rescue and breast cancer awareness ( check out the photo on my blog today ). I am so very thankful to everyone who sent love and support while I was waiting for word on my biopsy this week. The same time I was having my biopsy, a very special little heart pug in Washington was also having a biopsy. Max was my foster a few years ago. Max was adopted by one of the most loving families. His mom, Sarah, received the results from the lab reports, and the cancer was stage...

Pumpkins - an original oil painting by George De Chiara

Pumpkins 6x8 inches Oil on Canvas Panel by George De Chiara Click here to bid. Opening bid just one penny! I love this time of the year. The weather finally starts to cool off, the leaves start to change, and the pumpkins go on sale for Halloween. I just love all these miniatures varieties they have out now. When I was a kid, the only type I remember where those that you could carve. Now don't get me wrong, I like those too, but for paintings, I tend to go for the miniatures. They have great color patterns and come in all kinds of colors. Plus, they are a lot of fun to paint so when I ran across these the other day at the gardening store, I just couldn't pass them up. Today, I finally got a chance to use them in painting. To see a complete step-by-step demo of how this painting came to life visit my blog here . To see more of my paintings visit my web site here .

In the Stars White Poppies by Texas Flower Artist Nancy Medina

In the Stars White Poppies by Nancy Medina 11X14 Oil on Linen Board Purchase Information Nancy Medina Web Site In the Stars White Poppies is a new poppy landscape freshly bloomed in Flower Mound Studio tonight. Thank you again for all the good thoughts, the prayers, the candles, pughugs and sisterly embraces from my friends. I received two phone calls this afternoon, from two of the doctors. The radiologist called first (the gal with the cute spiky red hair) and the surgeon called second (the tall guy who was so exceptionally kind). Both seemed so happy to share good news - my biopsy showed nothing at all to be concerned about. I got a sense from each of them that they had called the instant they received the results, and I could also tell this was a call they both looked forward to making. My next thought was for the other calls they made, and the few they may have made this same day with different news. Prayer is powerful, and I believe it in wholeheartedly. Thank you for the prayer ...
